What do I enjoy most about tutoring? ๐
What I enjoy most about tutoring is seeing a student gradually become confident with something they previously found difficult.
Through my Master of Teaching and Mathematics teaching placements in Adelaide schools, I have worked with students across different year levels and abilities. I particularly enjoy the more individualised nature of tutoring, because it allows me to identify exactly where a student is struggling and adjust my explanation.
As someone who has studied in both China and Australia, I also understand that students can approach learning in very different ways.
My Strengths as Tutor ๐ช
One of my main strengths is explaining mathematical concepts in different ways. Through teaching Mathematics across Years 7โ11 and my experience supporting students as an SSO, I have worked with students with different levels of confidence, learning needs and cultural backgrounds. If a student does not understand my first explanation, I am comfortable changing the approachโfor example, breaking the problem into smaller steps, using a visual representation, connecting it to prior knowledge, or using a practical example. I am also patient and want students to feel comfortable saying, โI donโt un
Most important things I can do for a student ๐
For me, the most important thing is to find out what the student actually does not understand. Sometimes a student says, โIโm bad at Maths,รขโฌ but the real problem might just be one missing concept from earlier years.
I think a good tutor should find that gap, explain it clearly and give the student enough practice to feel comfortable doing it alone. I also think building confidence is important, because students are much more willing to try when they are not worried about making mistakes.
