What do I enjoy most about tutoring? 😁

What I enjoy most is watching a student go from feeling stuck or frustrated to genuinely understanding something on their own. There's a specific moment in a maths lesson where you can tell a concept has actually clicked, not just been memorised, and that's what I find most rewarding. Tutoring one-to-one with Third Space Learning gave me a lot of that — the sessions are structured enough that you can really track a student's progress, so you get to see them build confidence step by step, not just get through a worksheet. I also enjoy the problem-solving side of tutoring itself, figuring out why a student is stuck and finding the right way to explain it for them specifically, since the same concept often needs a completely different explanation depending on how someone thinks.

My Strengths as Tutor 💪

My biggest strength as a tutor is the ability to break complex problems down into clear, manageable steps and explain them in a way that genuinely makes sense to the student in front of me, not just repeat the textbook method. Tutoring maths part-time with Third Space Learning sharpened this directly — delivering structured, one-to-one online lessons meant I had to adapt my explanation in real time based on how a student was responding, whether that meant slowing down, trying a different approach, or working through a misconception step by step until it actually clicked. I'm patient and genuinely enjoy the moment a concept finally lands for a student — that's what keeps me invested in guiding someone through a problem rather than just giving them the answer. I also bring a background in financial analysis, where getting the underlying logic right is just as important as the final number, which has strengthened my own instinct for clear, structured mathematical reasoning that I can pass on to students.

Most important things I can do for a student 🏅

The most important thing I can do is help a student build real understanding, not just get them to the right answer for today's homework. That means being patient enough to find out exactly where their confusion starts, rather than assuming, and adjusting how I explain something until it genuinely makes sense to them rather than moving on too quickly. I also think it's important to build a student's confidence alongside their skills — maths anxiety is real, and a lot of students shut down before they even try, so creating a calm, encouraging space where it's okay to get something wrong is just as important as the maths itself. Finally, I want to leave a student more capable of solving the next problem on their own, not just the one in front of them, which means teaching the underlying method, not just the shortcut.

About Tiyana

Master of Management (Accounting and Finance) student at University of Melbourne

Hi, I'm Tiyana! I'm currently completing a Master's degree in Accounting and Finance at the University of Melbourne, and maths has been at the heart of everything I do — from my studies to my career in financial analysis. I've spent years working with numbers professionally, but tutoring is where I get to share that love of maths one-on-one, helping students build real confidence and understanding rather than just getting through homework. I tutor with patience and a calm, encouraging approach, and I really enjoy finding the explanation that finally makes a concept click for each student, since everyone learns a little differently. Whether we're working through the basics or tackling something more challenging, I'm here to make maths feel a little less intimidating and a lot more doable.
