What do I enjoy most about tutoring? 😁

What I enjoy most about tutoring isn’t just delivering good results, though that’s satisfying too; It's the process of growth, watching a student slowly become more confident in areas they once struggled with. I’ve experienced this firsthand tutoring my sister over Zoom in advanced mathematics since the start of the year, and those small aha moments are what make it rewarding for me as a tutor. It’s also taught me that understanding often comes from approaching something from a few different angles, and I thoroughly enjoy the challenge of finding the one that works.

My Strengths as Tutor 💪

As a tutor, I believe my key strength is recency. It was only last year that I sat my own HSC, so the challenges of high school academics are fresh in my mind. I understand how frustrating it can be when a concept seems foreign or overwhelming, because I was navigating those same feelings myself recently. Having finished Dux of my school, I also know what effective study and problem-solving actually looks like. I think this combination of genuine recent experience with the same struggles, and a track record of working through them, gives me a capacity to connect with and understand a student.

Most important things I can do for a student 🏅

I consider the most important thing a tutor can do for a student is to build their confidence. Shifting a student’s belief that they can’t do something into a genuine openness to try, I think, is what allows them to actually start enjoying the subject and the process of learning itself. This was certainly true for me: during years 7 to 9, maths was a real source of frustration, but the guidance and consistency of a tutor gradually built my confidence with the subject. By the time the HSC came around, studying maths had become a break from all my other subjects and was genuinely fun.
