What do I enjoy most about tutoring? 😁
I most enjoy the reward of seeing students develop their ability and appreciation for the subject over an extended stretch of time. This is ultimately more rewarding than anything that occurs in a single session; the big picture is what I think matters.
I also take great satisfaction in seeing students improve and get grades they are happy with.
And of course it is nice to see in a student's face that something new clicked and now they understand a connection they previously didn't know was there.
My Strengths as Tutor 💪
I always make sure to have a plan before the tutoring session starts, so the student gets the most from their time.
I think I'm a good communicator, with flexible and extensive linguistic abilities. I use my hands and body language a lot to keep students focused and engaged and often try to use analogies and real-world examples (on the fly and ones that I have thought of before) to bring relevant concepts down to earth so that students can grasp them.
I am very rarely late to sessions.
I have developed a very strong foundation in mathematics ever since leaving high school.
Most important things I can do for a student 🏅
Personally I think the most important strategy a tutor can adopt is to try and give the student the space to figure out the answer themselves; rather than giving it to them. This will force the student to take an active approach to learning rather than passively listening to the tutor, which I have learnt can be tempting but is ultimately less effective.
For maths, I think that when learning a new topic the first step should be to try and understand the topic at a more deep and conceptual level, rather than going straight into number crunching. This is unfortunately overlooked in high school.
