What do I enjoy most about tutoring? π
I haven't tried it yet. My inexperience may cause hiccups. However, I am willing to learn and I feel that, with experience, I could be a great tutor if given the chance. Schooling is important and I would enjoy passing on my fondness for English and Psychology to someone else. My partner has English as her second language (she lives in Austria!) and she says that talking to me helps her with her English skills. Which is awesome, because she is currently studying to become a teacher! What I will enjoy most about tutoring is the change it will make to a student's demeanour and confidence. Seeing results will be an amazing experience and will make me proud.
My Strengths as Tutor πͺ
- My warmth, compassion, patience, empathy (I didn't like studying at all as an adolescent - hence my poor year 12 grades), creativity, overall demeanour, and, perhaps most importantly of all, my passion and interest in the English language and Psychology.
- I seemingly inherited my mother's nurturing and supportive nature.
- My partner would tell you that I'm an excellent study buddy and that I try my best to be helpful where possible.
- I prefer to listen rather than to talk, which means that I will not be prone to bombarding a student with information and overwhelming them, discouraging them or making them feel unintelligent.
- I will not judge for any poor study habits or attitudes - I was there once, too.
- I would be the "cool tutor"; I'm into memes, video games (esp. PokΓ©mon; I could name them all based on a picture or even a silhouette of them), and heavy music.
Most important things I can do for a student π
As someone who studied Psychology for years, I can say that I did so because I had an excellent teacher for the subject in high school. My English teacher was also very nurturing despite my poor performance and that was an important experience for me. That encapsulates what I think is one of the most important things a tutor can do for a student: make them realise the beauty of a certain field or discipline, make them realise their own passions or strengths, or, at the very least, give them fond mental associations with the subject matter. A tutor can and does define what a discipline means to a student. Building rapport, confidence, and a sense of accomplishment - these are all things a tutor can and should do for a student. If given the opportunity, I could do those things.
