I believe that listening to the student is among the most important things a tutor can do. It is imperative that the student feels comfortable to share concepts that they feel unfamiliar with, therefore building a relationship with them is crucial. Having a good understanding of the student's optimal way of learning is also beneficial to the…

I believe that making every session meaningful, productive but entertaining is key to learning. A tutor should make sure that the student is well-engaged in the session but still focussing on their weaknesses and strengths. A tutor should make a personalized learning experience for every student and build a relationship of trust with the student.…

A tutor can be a guiding light for students. Each student has their own way of absorbing the information that they are taught. This might not always be available to students in a large classroom setting. A good tutor recognizes the strengths and weaknesses of the students and guides them accordingly. I spent most of my adult life abroad as a…

The most important thing is trust that both tutor and student should have on each other. An ease of asking questions and making mistakes is another very important thing. Its okay to make mistakes but if your student is afraid of you , they would never ask questions and will be afraid to make mistakes so the tutor will never be able to…

I believe the two most important things tutors can do for their students is: to give detailed feedback on a student’s work, recognising their weaknesses and discussing the specific questions in detail, whilst congratulating the student on their correct answers; and to ensure that the student never feels ‘dumb’, leading to them feeling…

I believe the most important thing here would be to ensure the student understands what is being taught and is able to move forward in their learning. Tutors as facilitators must be able to give them the confidence that they are improving and can do even better with persistent practice and revision. I think one of my greatest strengths is being…

It is very important as a tutor to understand your student. Be his silent friend and connect with him. Read his mental abilities, his interest, observe his qualities and disabilities, his way of learning things. And then try to impart the teaching depending on all these factors. Each student is different and so is the method of teaching. Teaching…

The most important things a tutor can do for a student go beyond simply reviewing homework. A tutor must make sure the student truly understands the 'why' behind the concepts, especially in subjects like Math, Chemistry, and Biology. Rote memorization is temporary; genuine understanding, which comes from breaking down complex ideas, is permanent.…

Give the student confidence. Confidence either to persist with the hard work till they hit a breakthrough or the confidence to thing around the problems. I believe it is most important for a tutor to tailor their teaching according to the needs of their student. Many students learn in different ways such as visual or through different compounding activities to build a strong foundation before moving on to more difficult concepts. I believe being able to teach a student in the way that is most…

Tess is tutoring my daughter, Zoe, in Year 7 Maths. Although we are early in the journey Zoe has already gained confidence in her ability. Tess helps her feel comfortable and confident that she can achieve her goals. I am very pleased that I have Tess to assist Zoe and provide her with the support she needs.

Inside UnderdaleTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 4 student Emma worked on recognising and ordering decimal numbers, as well as rounding decimals to the nearest tenth.

In Year 8, Jack focused on expanding and simplifying algebraic expressions using brackets, along with solving worded problems by rearranging equations to find x.

Meanwhile, Year 9 student Sarah tackled trigonometry skills such as using sine, cosine, and tangent ratios to solve for unknown sides in right-angled triangles, applying these methods to homework and real-world examples.

Recent Challenges

In Year 10 English, a student avoided integrating quotes into sentences, which made their arguments less persuasive; as noted, "she can work on clearly explaining why [quotes] support her arguments."

In Year 8 Maths, skipping steps when calculating the surface area of complex shapes led to confusion and lost marks—one tutor observed that "missing a step… is vital to the accuracy of the answer."

Meanwhile, a Year 4 student mixed up numerator and denominator when saying fractions aloud, making it difficult to check understanding in class.

In all cases, these habits left students second-guessing their answers or hesitating during independent tasks.

Recent Achievements

One Underdale tutor recently noticed a big shift with a Year 10 student who, after weeks of struggling to rearrange linear equations, was able to independently find the equation of a line from two points and even completed her homework with barely any help.

In another session, a high schooler working on science reports moved from being unsure about interpreting experimental data to confidently using advanced scientific language in her practical report write-up.

Meanwhile, a Year 4 student who used to rush through reading is now pausing to re-read sentences for meaning and starting to use a dictionary during lessons without prompting.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Thebarton Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Nazareth Catholic College - St Gabriel Centre Campus.
