Other than imparting the lessons in school, I think being able to empathize with the students is key in effective teaching. As a matter of strategy, what I will do is to meet them where they are academically, then prepare a plan and implement it to be able to meet our goal(s). I have the ability to relate with young kids well. Raising three…

The most important things a tutor can do could be split into two parts. Academically, tutors are there to help the student to learn all the knowledge required for them to achieve better grades. Spiritually, tutors are there as mentors, which they need to encourage the student to achieve their full potential, because usually due to exam pressure,…

Helping students achieve their potential, adapting to kid's individual needs, building lasting relationships based on shared goals these are some of the impacts of a tutor on the student. But the most incredible aspect of tutoring is that it merges education and what is usually called enrichment. A good tutor can combine subjects in…

I believe it is important to understand the student's weaknesses and strengths before starting to teach them. I have come across a common problem with students, which is that they often jump straight into trying to solve a problem without fully understanding the theory/basics first. Hence, I try to first help them understand the basics then go…

A tutor will ideally be able to give a student confidence, knowledge, an understanding of why learning is important, and hopefully some sense of enjoyment of the learning process. The important thing is to develop the student's ability to independently study. It is like that proverb 'Give a man a fish, and you feed him for a day. Teach a man to fish, and you feed him for a lifetime.' There are going to be times where the student will find themselves in a position with an urgent question regarding their assignment which is…

The most important things a tutor can do for a student is to be prepared for each session, including having a strong grasp of the content, being able to answer and explain each of the questions the student has. Tess is tutoring my daughter, Zoe, in Year 7 Maths. Although we are early in the journey Zoe has already gained confidence in her ability. Tess helps her feel comfortable and confident that she can achieve her goals. I am very pleased that I have Tess to assist Zoe and provide her with the support she needs.

Inside UnderdaleTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 4 student Emma worked on recognising and ordering decimal numbers, as well as rounding decimals to the nearest tenth.

In Year 8, Jack focused on expanding and simplifying algebraic expressions using brackets, along with solving worded problems by rearranging equations to find x.

Meanwhile, Year 9 student Sarah tackled trigonometry skills such as using sine, cosine, and tangent ratios to solve for unknown sides in right-angled triangles, applying these methods to homework and real-world examples.

Recent Challenges

In Year 10 English, a student avoided integrating quotes into sentences, which made their arguments less persuasive; as noted, "she can work on clearly explaining why [quotes] support her arguments."

In Year 8 Maths, skipping steps when calculating the surface area of complex shapes led to confusion and lost marks—one tutor observed that "missing a step… is vital to the accuracy of the answer."

Meanwhile, a Year 4 student mixed up numerator and denominator when saying fractions aloud, making it difficult to check understanding in class.

In all cases, these habits left students second-guessing their answers or hesitating during independent tasks.

Recent Achievements

One Underdale tutor recently noticed a big shift with a Year 10 student who, after weeks of struggling to rearrange linear equations, was able to independently find the equation of a line from two points and even completed her homework with barely any help.

In another session, a high schooler working on science reports moved from being unsure about interpreting experimental data to confidently using advanced scientific language in her practical report write-up.

Meanwhile, a Year 4 student who used to rush through reading is now pausing to re-read sentences for meaning and starting to use a dictionary during lessons without prompting.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Thebarton Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Nazareth Catholic College - St Gabriel Centre Campus.
