I think one of the most important things a tutor can do for a student is to actively listen and to be organised with planning lessons. It’s really important to understand exactly what the student requires. This could be done through a pre-assessment at the start of the sessions. The tutor can then take that work home and arrange the next lesson…

Making an easy pathway of learning for students, helping them in planning and achieving the desired output.Students should enjoy the teaching of the tutor and tutor must be willing to provide practical example to the student for better understanding of the concepts while learning. Identifying the student's strengths and weaknesses is crucial. I would ensure their strengths are reflected through their work and that we are spending extra time focusing on the weaker areas. As a tutor, you act as the student's moral support, as the subjects they are receiving tutoring for are the subjects they find the most challenging. You are…

A tutor's main job is to help re-explaining new concepts and/or help students consolidate new concepts as well as integrating new ones as they are being taught. Therefore, the most important things that a tutor can do for a student is to explain new concepts in simple and relatable terms, encourage interests in a particular subject and most…

The important thing is to develop the student's ability to independently study. It is like that proverb 'Give a man a fish, and you feed him for a day. Teach a man to fish, and you feed him for a lifetime.' There are going to be times where the student will find themselves in a position with an urgent question regarding their assignment which is…

I believe that a tutor should guide their students to do their best and learn. A tutor should be good at communicating and explaining things in ways that the student understands. I am a hardworking and organised person and i always give everything my all. I am a perfectionist and worked hard in year 12 to receive a high ATAR. i am approachable and…

Equip them with the tools they need to succeed. Most students do not achieve their full potential because they do not believe they have it in them. The most important thing a tutor can do is to help foster a love for learning and encourage a student to believe in themselves. If they believe in themselves, they can do anything. I am patient and…

Tess is tutoring my daughter, Zoe, in Year 7 Maths. Although we are early in the journey Zoe has already gained confidence in her ability. Tess helps her feel comfortable and confident that she can achieve her goals. I am very pleased that I have Tess to assist Zoe and provide her with the support she needs.

Inside UnderdaleTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 4 student Emma worked on recognising and ordering decimal numbers, as well as rounding decimals to the nearest tenth.

In Year 8, Jack focused on expanding and simplifying algebraic expressions using brackets, along with solving worded problems by rearranging equations to find x.

Meanwhile, Year 9 student Sarah tackled trigonometry skills such as using sine, cosine, and tangent ratios to solve for unknown sides in right-angled triangles, applying these methods to homework and real-world examples.

Recent Challenges

In Year 10 English, a student avoided integrating quotes into sentences, which made their arguments less persuasive; as noted, "she can work on clearly explaining why [quotes] support her arguments."

In Year 8 Maths, skipping steps when calculating the surface area of complex shapes led to confusion and lost marks—one tutor observed that "missing a step… is vital to the accuracy of the answer."

Meanwhile, a Year 4 student mixed up numerator and denominator when saying fractions aloud, making it difficult to check understanding in class.

In all cases, these habits left students second-guessing their answers or hesitating during independent tasks.

Recent Achievements

One Underdale tutor recently noticed a big shift with a Year 10 student who, after weeks of struggling to rearrange linear equations, was able to independently find the equation of a line from two points and even completed her homework with barely any help.

In another session, a high schooler working on science reports moved from being unsure about interpreting experimental data to confidently using advanced scientific language in her practical report write-up.

Meanwhile, a Year 4 student who used to rush through reading is now pausing to re-read sentences for meaning and starting to use a dictionary during lessons without prompting.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Thebarton Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Nazareth Catholic College - St Gabriel Centre Campus.
