The most important thing a tutor can do is assist the student in achieving a higher level of understanding in a particular topic. Once this basic understanding is reached than all similar problems become clear. I strive to make sure that the student understands topics. I do this by taking several approaches to make sure that the topic is…

In short, making the academic journey simpler and more enjoyable. To do this, I think a tutor should have the ability to: identifying the strengths and weaknesses of the student, build a personalised structured learning plan, build foundational understanding of subjects not just memorisation, break down complex concepts into manageable chunks,…

I believe one of the most important things a tutor can do is to help the student find confidence that they can achieve, whilst keeping their passion alive for the subject. A tutor is there to help students find the answers so they can realise their full potential. Through my work as a science communicator, I have the ability to alter and tailor my…

A tutor makes a student feel like even though the work is difficult and deadlines are looming, everything will be okay. The tutor acts as a mentor who helps students to improve their time management and study skills, as well as clarifying difficult points. This makes the student feel reassured about their progress through the course. I like to…

Being able to engage the student in the lesson and making sure they actually understand. Learning should be a fun process if not it should be made as fun as possible. Patience and understanding. Some of the best teachers I had in were those who would take the time to listen to your question and the answer them with careful detail so that you are able to understand the answer and the concept behind that answer. I believe that one of my strengths as a tutor would be that I was never top of my class. I do believe…

I think a tutor should be able to empathize with students, understand their situations and make reasonable targets for them to achieve academically. The most important things i can do for a student include asking the students how they answered certain questions, allowing them to realise where their errors are and learn off of their mistakes. Being able to regurgitate questions into smaller sections is the key in answering exam style questions, thus it is very important for a tutor to be able…

I think the most important thing a tutor can do for a student is to help them to understand the topic and not just to help them complete the assignment. It is easy to sit with the student and help them through each step and each problem to complete some assignment, but if they did not understand it then the session was essentially useless for…

To find a way to explain problems to a student that suits that particular student, as you can explain something to someone for a long time, but they may still be unable to understand it if it isn't presented in a way that is suitable for their learning style. Not all students are modelled the same way. Some are able to learn by studying the books while others require a lot of practice. I spend a lot of time communicating with the student…

Inside Unley ParkTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 5 student Noah focused on long and short division as well as strategies for rounding numbers to the nearest place value, using both school homework and targeted worksheets.

In Year 8, Ella worked through algebraic expressions by collecting like terms and expanding brackets, then tackled practice questions involving probability of events with sample spaces.

Meanwhile, Year 11 student Matilda prepared for her upcoming maths test by revising exponentials and also completed key sections of her biochemistry assignment, discussing concepts like electronegativity and dipoles.

Recent Challenges

A Year 9 student's algebra work revealed a tendency to "skip showing steps in working," making it difficult to spot and fix sign errors; as noted, "more care needs to be taken in formatting her working out."

Meanwhile, in Year 11 Biology, an assignment draft was only worked on during lessons—independent progress at home lagged behind, impacting readiness for deadlines.

For a primary student, over-reliance on calculators emerged when practicing times tables and rounding, which slowed recall of basic facts.

In one session, a lack of confidence meant questions weren't asked even when confusion arose about worded problems.

Recent Achievements

One Unley Park tutor recently saw a big shift with a Year 11 student who, after struggling to work through practice tests alone, started completing most homework independently and only needed help with the last two questions.

In another session, a Year 8 student who previously waited for every prompt now tries solving algebra problems solo—she explained her process out loud and pinpointed mistakes herself when shown.

Meanwhile, in primary years, a younger student went from needing reminders to forming sentences using new words each week without any prompting. At the end of one lesson, she read her sentences aloud on her own initiative.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Unley Civic Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Walford Anglican School for Girls.
