To help the student form a routine and improve performance in the school. Teaching the skill of learning and eventually working towards independence is very important to me. When a student develops inner strength to learn, half of the work is done. Specially in Maths i like to analyze any gaps and help the student to bridge these gaps first. To…

The most important things a tutor can do for a student are to: 1 - place a focus on topics the student is struggling with 2 - teach these topics in a way that is different from what they are being taught in class. From a basic principles foundation and adding complexity as the student understands the topic more. I am currently a 3rd-year…

Understand how the student thinks, and how best to reach out to them so that they understand the topic most effectively, and most importantly create a fun environment where studying can be viewed as a fun activity as well. The most important thing a tutor can do for a student is to foster confidence and independence in their learning journey. While providing subject-specific knowledge is essential, empowering students to develop critical thinking, problem-solving skills, and effective study habits ensures they can succeed beyond the tutoring sessions. A tutor…

Inside WangaraTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 3 student Ethan worked on single- and double-digit addition and subtraction, as well as building confidence with the 1 and 2 times tables using matching card games.

In Year 9, Lily focused on solving linear equations and working through algebra textbook exercises, then reviewed her test results to target areas needing extra practice.

Meanwhile, Year 10 student Max tackled quadratic factorisation—including difference of perfect squares—and extended into transformations of quadratic functions, supporting his understanding with graph-based examples.

Recent Challenges

A Year 11 student reviewing a recent test found most marks lost to "silly mistakes" under time pressure; as discussed, better planning in assessments is needed to avoid these errors.

In Year 8 algebra, one learner repeatedly swapped y- and x-intercepts—this mix-up, noted during graph work, made it hard to check answers efficiently.

Meanwhile, a Year 3 child tackling two-times tables often guessed rather than counted or worked through the logic, slowing improvement. As one tutor put it: "He tended to guess answers...and was usually incorrect unless physically counting." This left him frustrated when clues ran out.

Recent Achievements

One Wangara tutor noticed a Year 11 student who used to hesitate on tough problems now attempts challenging questions independently, showing much more initiative.

Another high schooler who previously struggled with indice laws managed to complete all related exercises independently this week—something she hadn't done before.

In primary sessions, a Year 4 student who would often guess answers began asking clarifying questions when unsure and finished his maths worksheet with only one prompt from the tutor.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Woodvale Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Madeley Primary School.
