Help them gain interest in what they're trying to study/learn. The problem with kids not wanting to learn isn't because the subject is hard, usually it's because they have no interest in the subject whatsoever. There's always a way to show someone the appeal of every single subject. It can be hard but it's very possible and many teachers and…

Inside WerringtonTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 6 student Larena focused on converting between mixed and improper fractions, as well as practising addition and subtraction of fractions by finding common denominators.

Year 8 student Hazell worked on expanding and factorising algebraic expressions, including using the distributive law for binomial products, and also tackled right-angled triangle trigonometry—specifically identifying angles of elevation/depression in practical worded problems.

Meanwhile, Year 9 student Ella reviewed solving linear inequalities from number lines and practised calculating surface area and volume for composite three-dimensional shapes such as spheres and cylinders.

Recent Challenges

Several process-related habits are limiting progress across different year levels.

In Year 9 mathematics, Hazell repeatedly did not complete assigned homework, leading to forgotten methods in trigonometry and algebra—"Hazell expressed she simply didn't have time to complete her homework," one tutor noted, resulting in difficulty recalling SOHCAHTOA in later sessions.

In a primary session, Larena's lack of times tables fluency slowed fraction work; even after reminders and quizzes, converting between mixed and improper fractions remained inconsistent.

A senior student displayed over-reliance on rote-learnt formulas: when worded or unfamiliar questions appeared, applying the right strategy became much harder without deeper understanding.

Recent Achievements

A tutor in Werrington recently saw some real steps forward across different year groups. In Year 9, Hazell had been making frequent "silly mistakes" when expanding and factorising algebraic expressions, but now she's completing her homework with much higher accuracy and even achieved 98% on an investigative task—her best result yet.

Meanwhile, Larena (Year 6) used to hesitate when working with fractions, but after guided practice, she finished the last three questions of a worksheet completely on her own and got them all right.

Sophie (Year 11) has started to independently catch and correct minor errors in her probability homework as soon as they come up, showing true self-correction skills.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as St Marys Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Werrington Public School.
