In my personal opinion besides teaching a student what is in the unit/study guide, a tutor should be taking responsibility in creating a fun learning environment and encouraging and motivating the students to be confident. This would help to enhance the students performance. The strength I have as an individual is I am able to create a comfortable…

Tutors are someone students can rely on for academic assistance. I recognise that the role of tutors is to aid students in their educational pathways and help students in realising their true academic capabilities, constantly providing constructive feedback for areas of improvement. It is also important to have understanding as the VCE process is…

believe the most crucial aspects of tutoring involve tailoring my approach to meet the specific needs of each student. Firstly, it's essential to identify their strengths and weaknesses to create a customized learning plan. This may involve adapting my teaching style, introducing alternative resources, or providing additional practice in areas…

Be patient, be attentive to their learning styles, involve them in the process of learning, focus on their strengths and not just the areas that they’re struggling with and make sure I fully understand the tasks that they are required to do so I can best support them to complete these. An important thing would be to instil a sense of confidence in a student about a particular subject, theory, or whatever it is that they are struggling with. Without confidence, even if a student may know the content or understand the theory, it can be difficult to do well in that subject. This is achieved by repeating a concept or practising it a…

The most important thing a tutor can do for a student is to understand their individual learning method and cater their lessons to suit. There must be a strong communication bond between both parties, otherwise the student will not enjoy the full benefits of the tutorial lesson. My strengths as a tutor would be my thorough knowledge and commitment…

What I consider to be the most important things a tutor can do for a student is understanding the pace the student requires and not focusing on how much a student can complete in a set time. A tutor is someone who can help to support and strengthen students' self-efficacy one-on-one. This is extremely important as classroom teachers have to manage multiple students in a classroom and cannot provide the same undivided attention as a tutor can. Tutors instil confidence in their students, assist them in unpacking and understanding areas…

I believe the most important facet of tutoring students is learning to empathise with them to gain their unique perspective. This is important because it enables the tutor to be critical of their existing teaching habits, to revise their strategies and be adaptable to suit the needs of the student. Simultaneously, I believe it is crucial to match…

Inside AberfeldieTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 7 student Sarah worked on factorising and expanding algebraic expressions, including an introduction to the "Magic X method" for quadratics.

For Year 8, Jack focused on trigonometric ratios—using diagrams to connect sine, cosine, and tangent with right-angled triangles—and revised graphing lines by finding gradients and axis intercepts.

Meanwhile, Year 9 student Emily practised scientific notation alongside significant figures and applied exponent laws in problem-solving contexts.

Recent Challenges

A Year 8 student repeatedly left algebraic fractions homework incomplete, meaning skills didn't progress between sessions.

In Year 10, one learner avoided writing out steps when rearranging equations, as the tutor noted: "She only used her calculator and couldn't replicate the method afterwards."

A Year 7 struggled with messy working—numbers and steps ran together on the page, which made checking for mistakes much harder.

Meanwhile, a senior student lost motivation after struggling with vocabulary in essay writing; frustration grew each time sentences were marked incorrect, leading to slower improvement in both confidence and output.

Recent Achievements

One Aberfeldie tutor noticed a big shift in a Year 10 student's approach: after struggling with mistakes on matrix assignments, he recently completed his work without errors and started presenting his solutions clearly for exams.

In a Year 8 English session, Sam—who used to be hesitant sharing ideas—spoke up more than usual and received positive feedback from his teacher on his essay.

Meanwhile, Julia in Year 5 has begun taking her own notes during lessons rather than waiting for prompts, showing new independence she didn't have at the start of term.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Maribyrnong Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Aberfeldie Primary School.
