I believe the most important thing a tutor can do for a student is to not only be able to teach them the material, but to also be able to mentor them. By mentoring, I mean having a close, trusting relationship with your student in order to help them improve their skills on a daily basis. The mentoring relationship allows learning to go beyond…

I think having a good personality is the most important thing as a tutor. This is because an educator is supposed to be patient, calm and helpful in front of his/her students. If he/she can't do that, he/she will always be in arguments with the students and thus mutual trusts between them will be lost. I think I have a good academic backgrounds…

First and foremost, a tutor must have faith in his/her student. Having faith means having the trust that her students have the capability to excel not just academically but, in character development as well. As a tutor, I am not only an assistant in my student’s academic work. I am also a role model whom my student will look up to. Therefore, I…

Under most circumstances, students who need tutoring are usually having unsatisfactory performance in that specific subject. We, as tutors, are surely supposed to help them with school tasks; however, more importantly, we should also help students regain their confidence for that subject. The most important thing a tutor can do for a student is to show them the pathway that leads to understanding of a particular concept. It is about the HOW we get to the final result rather than WHAT the final result is. A tutor is successful is the student is able to understand the reasoning behind a certain result/concept. After the tutor…

A tutor should understand that different students have different levels of interests and requirements in Math. For those who merely wants to pass their exams, I would teach them the application of mathematical methods. For those who are interested in math, I would explain to them the principles and deeper logics of mathematical phenomenons beneath…

While a tutor's main role is to teach new concepts and help students review what they've learnt at school, I believe it is equally important to build student's confidence towards the subject and spark their interest in learning. I believe that every student is different but special in their own way. Every student should be instilled with good values so that they can grow up to be good valuable men and women. It's the responsibility of tutors to care for their students. They should use a variety of strategies to help each student become personally invested in, and take…

Personally, I thought being a tutor needs patience and passion. The most important things a tutor can do for a student is to make sure he or she knew and understand fully what this particular student needs. Each student has their own needs and to teach with different techniques. Also, a tutor needs to be responsible and take care of his or her…

Zacharo, Albert Park

Inside Albert ParkTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 7 student Eliza focused on right-angled triangle trigonometry, using sine, cosine, and tangent to find unknown sides and angles, and practised interpreting worded problems involving true bearings.

Year 10 student Olivia worked through quadratic equations by completing the square and factorisation in preparation for a test, as well as reviewing the expansion of quadratics.

Meanwhile, Year 11 student Max tackled logarithms—covering concepts and worksheet practice—before moving on to applications of differentiation for polynomials.

Recent Challenges

A Year 11 student preparing a statistics assignment sometimes left analysis sections unfinished or only in dot points, as noted: "Convert dot point ideas into sentences & paragraphs." This led to feedback being delayed and made self-review harder.

In Year 9, another student's exam revision was inconsistent—practice focused on familiar networks content rather than trickier trigonometry and matrix multiplication.

For a Year 8 maths task, one student relied heavily on calculator shortcuts during matrix questions ("more practice is needed on calculator"), which hid gaps in understanding when the method changed.

Missed opportunities for deeper learning appeared across multiple years when written work stayed incomplete or revision avoided less confident topics.

Recent Achievements

One Albert Park tutor noticed a Year 10 student who used to mix up x and y coordinates now reliably applies the correct formulas for midpoint, distance, and gradient, even graphing without errors.

A Year 12 student who previously hesitated to ask questions about differentiation is now tackling polynomial problems independently and recently explained the tangent–secant relationship back to the tutor unprompted.

Meanwhile, a younger student in Year 7 has shifted from guessing angles in triangles to methodically identifying sides using SOHCAHTOA before solving for missing values—last session, she found all missing angles herself on the first try.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Albert Park Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Albert Park Primary School.
