Understand the student's needs: A good tutor should take the time to understand the student's strengths, weaknesses, learning style, and goals. This helps the tutor tailor their approach to best support the student's individual needs. 1>Expertise in the subject matter: The ability to teach a subject effectively requires a deep understanding of the…

For me it is important for tutor to be able to encourage and make the student enjoy learning. Because in order for students to learn faster, they would need to be willing to digest the new knowledge and information given by the tutor. Furthermore, it is important for tutor to look at a problem from many different perspective, because one point of…

Most importantly a teacher can create a safe learning environment where the child is not afraid to ask questions. Encouraging them to ask questions will make them more confident and as a teacher its my duty to make them feel like they can trust an rely on me. A tutor I want to make it interesting so that students are more keen to learn and adapt…

I think teaching students how to be independent is something tutors must do. Prioritizing things like active learning wherein students get to question things themselves, rather than being spoon-fed answers is important. Making them learn that they can find the answers themselves if they put in the effort is important. And obviously creating all…

So as i mentioned earlier, giving the student enough freedom to freely voice their doubts and clear them out without any hesitation by creating an environment where they feel encouraged to express themselves openly. The most important thing apart from helping the student understand that they can solve things on their own, is teaching the student how to study the subject. This way, the student will gradually understand how learning the subject works. I have a lot of patience and I am very good at using logistics. I can explain the same thing in many different…

Personal relationships can form foundational to student success. Tutors can customize the lessons and activities according to students understanding. I think understanding the student's capacity, strengths, and weaknesses plays a vital role in being a tutor, therefore, the tutor could implement a personalized system for each student. I am an organized and systematic person. I can take notes and make summary of a topic neatly. In addition, I like to simplify a concept to make my students…

They should be patient according to the student's needs, while also being accommodating yet pushing them to continue learning to the best of their ability. Most importantly, a tutor needs to make sure the student has a love for learning. Communication skills for all ages, enthusiasm, planning ahead and the ability to adjust lessons to different…

The most important things a tutor can do for a student is to first be understanding as each student has different experiences with learning subjects and may also have problems outside of education. Secondly would be to be approachable and appear easy-going so the student will not be intimidated or scared in having learning sessions with you.…

Good tutors should be able to help students improve and not dependent on them, they should be able to help a student solve problems and not simply giving them answers. In addition, tutors also have to be patient as not all students have the same learning abilities. Lastly, I think a tutor should put in the effort to understand both the materials…

The most important thing a tutor can do for a student is buiding their confidence and enjoyment of a subject that they perhaps once struggled with. I believe that if a student comes into a tutoring session each day begrudgingly with absolute hatred of a subject they won’t absorb what is being taught as well because they’d rather be somewhere…

Studying techniques, creating good habits and of course, feedback for improvements! These are the important aspects that a tutor should show their students. Inside AlphingtonTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 7 student Saxon revised indices, number lines, and the conversion of decimals and fractions to prepare for an upcoming test.

In Year 9, Ethan worked on structuring essays with a focus on crafting strong introductions and body paragraphs using relevant evidence from texts.

Meanwhile, Year 10 student Nicholas practised analysing lyrics for his English oral presentation and refined his ability to identify key themes in "The Sapphires."

Recent Challenges

A Year 8 student repeatedly struggled to connect algebraic rules with their purpose, often relying on memorisation instead of understanding—this led to confusion when teachers and peers offered differing methods.

As one tutor noted, "she was more comfortable repeating similar questions than unpacking why a method worked," which made worded problems especially challenging.

In VCE English, a senior student's essays lacked evidence and structure; attempts at analysis were undermined by summary-style writing and unclear topic sentences.

This meant promising ideas remained unsupported in assessments, affecting marks even when insight was present.

Recent Achievements

A tutor in Alphington noticed that Nicholas, a high school student, has started using the TEEL essay structure more independently and now selects evidence to support his points without prompting—something he was hesitant about earlier in the term.

Taylah, also in high school, recently surprised her tutor by recalling key algebra techniques after a long break and smoothly solving new problems on her own, which marks a shift from needing step-by-step guidance last year.

Meanwhile, Aden (primary) took real pride in his maths progress and now volunteers to try challenging addition questions first, instead of waiting for help.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Fairfield Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Alphington Primary School.
