I believe that tutoring for a student should be a safe zone space where they can make mistakes. Tutoring does not have the same pressue for a student that school can, as such it is important for a tutor to be patient and adaptive when a student is struggling with a concept. A tutor should welcome mistakes as an opportunity to grow. I also believe…

The learning space is the most impactful factor for a student's capacity to learn. If they don't feel safe or they don't feel encouraged, they can lose interest and/or disengage. Maintaining this space is the most important thing a tutor or teacher can do for their students. This takes the form of a number of things; the words and tone of voice…

Inside AmberleyTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 5 student Emily focused on long division strategies and strengthening her understanding of proportions, using visual note-taking for clarity.

In Year 9, Ethan worked through simultaneous equations and practiced calculating compound interest with step-by-step support.

Meanwhile, Year 10 student Lily reviewed bivariate data and scatter plots as part of PSMT assessment preparation, including interpreting real-world statistics using Excel to make predictions.

Recent Challenges

Note-taking and independent study routines stood out as key areas for growth across both primary and high school years.

In Year 10 mathematics, notes needed to be made where Emily forgot the formula or didn't precisely know how to apply the algorithm, and her notebook was sometimes left behind, making it hard to check progress ("I was not able to verify her notes as she left her notebook in class").

In senior classes (Years 11–12), incomplete revision booklets and missed practice with PSMT assessments slowed confidence-building.

After a tough week, a tired Year 9 student struggled to focus on algebra tasks, highlighting how inconsistent study schedules can sap energy for new concepts.

Recent Achievements

A recent Amberley tutoring session saw a Year 11 student finally start to catch her own mistakes in algebra, openly double-checking her work instead of rushing through as she used to.

Another high school student, after struggling for weeks with fractions, surprised her tutor by completing all the fraction problems on her homework without help—something she'd never managed before.

Meanwhile, a Year 5 learner who usually hesitated to speak up began using "talk aloud" strategies during math questions, giving clear explanations in her own words rather than relying on prompts.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Ipswich Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Immaculate Heart School.
