The most important things a tutor can do to a student is to not teach, but to make them understand what is being taught, and thereby boost their confidence. Merely parroting out concepts to students would get the job done, but will not help the student understand any better, or feel any more confident. Instead, understanding where the student is…

I understand that teachers don't always have time to help students one-on-one and that tutors can help bridge the gap. I believe that learning is an exponential process, so a small victory in a tutoring session can lead to enormous benefits in the student's future. I am passionate about enabling students to maximise their…

The most important things a tutor can do for a student, in my opinion, are: 1. Foster a love of learning: The best tutors inspire curiosity and make learning enjoyable, not just a chore. 2. Build confidence: Many students struggle with self-doubt. A tutor can help them believe in their abilities and tackle challenges with a positive…

I think encouraging students to develop self-learning skills plays the important role in educational networks as we cannot tutor them forever. We should not only assist students only to understand the materials provided but also teach them the skills of how to learn effectively and what to do when encountering the new lesson/content of knowledge…

Instill the resilience and capacity for students to dedicate and apply themselves to their learning rather than being dependent on a tutor to give them all the answers. I tailored my teaching style and session structure to suit the needs of my students rather than using a one-size-fits-all approach. I pride myself in making learning enjoyable…

I think the most important things that a tutor can do is to instil in students the drive to learn more about a subject, fix any misconceptions they may have, and to make them feel comfortable enough to ask any questions they have. I think my strengths come from finding gaps in a student’s knowledge and using appropriate measures to rectify them.…

A tutor should be understanding of their students' learning and study patterns and help them in a way that will benefit their students the most. A tutor should personally support and encourage their student to become more confident in themselves and their study areas alongside explaining content. I think as a tutor, support is the most important thing we can do to students. This can be educational support, but also when a student is struggling emotionally or finding it challenging to navigate through work, I think as tutors we should also help the student in need. The most important thing a tutor can do for a student, of course apart from being thorough in the subject matter they are teaching, is also to be very empathetic towards the student. Build their confidence as much as their knowledge. A lot of students who struggle aren't actually bad at the subject they've just convinced themselves they are. Fixing that mindset matters as much as getting the right answer. I'm good at breaking down complex problems step by step without overcomplicating it. I also don't make students feel stupid…

I consider guidance as the most important thing a tutor can do for a student. Teachers are important but sometimes they can be carried away by teaching a large group of students in the class. Tutors are there to give personal support to the students to help not just their academic development and also emotionally What most teachers cannot do is…

I firmly believe the most important thing a tutor can do for a student is to personalise their learning experience. To let the student understand the mechanism or logic behind the problem, not simply solving the question he/she is facing. Inside AshburtonTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 11 student Emily focused on solving trigonometric equations and interpreting tan graphs, before starting introductory work on combinations and permutations.

Year 10 student Sam worked through financial maths problems including compound interest, then explored the use of transition matrices to model real-world scenarios.

Meanwhile, Year 7 student Phoebe revised statistics by calculating mean, median, and mode for grouped data in preparation for an upcoming test.

Recent Challenges

A Year 11 student often needed extra prompts to start unfamiliar rate and trig graphing questions; "if it was not obvious how to make the triangle, additional prompting was needed." This hesitation slowed progress and meant fewer questions were completed during sessions.

In Year 8 English, one student did not follow their writing plan or think sentences through before starting, which made paragraphs feel disjointed.

For a younger student, forgetting rules for spelling—such as 'ou' versus 'ow'—persisted even after recent revision.

A VCE learner's uncharged laptop limited access to digital notes and disrupted exam preparation in the moment.

Recent Achievements

One Ashburton tutor recently noticed a big shift with a Year 11 student who, after struggling to apply financial maths formulas, started introducing new shortcuts and solving problems more independently.

In another session, a Year 9 student who previously needed lots of prompting was able to tackle simultaneous equations solo once she'd worked through an example together.

Meanwhile, one younger student made clear progress by writing longer sentences and handling harder subtraction questions with minimal help—she now separates her ideas into paragraphs without reminders.

Last week, a high schooler finished every question on their trig worksheet correctly, including those involving horizontal translations.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Ashburton Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like St Michael's School.
