The most important thing that a tutor can do for a student is to understand how the student learns. By knowing the students learning preferences and ability the tutor can tailor their approach to individuals rather than utilising a blanket approach, which can often leave some students behind. My strengths lie in the ability to communicate ideas or…

Although high results is a must, tutors should also respect or accept what students may want to gain out of their HSC marks. We cannot force students to learn but making the content more interesting will help motivate those who struggle to grasp the concept. The key point is that after every session, the student can leave knowing that they have…

The most important thing a tutor can do for a student is to motivate a student when they feel demotivated by making them feel confident in their skills and knowledge. It's important for the tutor to provide full support and guidance in an individualised manner to tailor to their specific needs. It's also important for the tutor to communicate…

I believe that all providers of education should not only prepare a student for an exam, but to open the student's eyes to the wider world, where they can explore their passions. In this way, I consider confidence an important aspect that a tutor can provide to a student. School can sometimes feel so impossible, when sitting in a large classroom…

The most important thing tutors can do is support their students which includes adapting lessons to individual learning styles and needs. Along with pinpointing any gaps in knowledge, and help the students understand those areas. Along with listening to them, about what things they struggle with and what they’re already good at. Is to provide support, as I student I know it gets hard to understand what teachers are trying to say. I like getting things write and I feel like by doing…

Establish a comfortable environment for the student to enjoy the learning journey rather than be seen as a tool. Inside AshcroftTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 6 student Ariana focused on angle relationships and probability by reviewing her recent school exam, along with quick-fire practice on square roots.

Year 8 student Nayeshehour completed his maths homework, demonstrating solid understanding of index notation and square roots as well as tackling time conversions between hours and minutes in decimal form.

For a younger student in Year 4, work included practising long division—both with and without remainders—and reinforcing times tables from 6 to 12 for fluency.

Recent Challenges

In Year 7 mathematics, one student often left homework incomplete and skipped answering many revision questions, making it difficult to pinpoint areas needing review.

A tutor observed, "her working out is confusing and may not be accepted by her classroom teacher," after she solved long division in her head without showing steps.

In senior years, exam stress led another student to misplace notes on angles and probability—she then struggled to recall key concepts during assessments.

In primary English, a reluctance to read full passages resulted in missing details required for comprehension questions.

Messy written work sometimes made graph interpretation harder for teachers to follow.

Recent Achievements

One Ashcroft tutor noticed a big shift in Ariana, a Year 7 student who previously hesitated with long division—she now solves multi-digit problems independently and recently completed her homework without any errors.

In a senior session, another high school student tackled one-step algebraic equations after initially struggling; she could explain why each operation matters, and started using opposite operations unprompted.

Meanwhile, a Year 3 student who used to wait for help is now confidently reading clocks on his own and interpreting worded time questions without assistance.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Miller Branch Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Ashcroft Public School.
