Understand the student, be patient with them and rather than becoming the student's boss, become their leader/role model and guide them towards their goals. A tutor should also have a growth mindset with his students and always be positive not letting his students drop their heads. I'm very patient and I also completed a Psychology internship in a…

As I've stated before, I have a love of learning. This has not only allowed me to excel in my studies but has also filled my life with joy and wonder at the many things there are to learn and understand. This was given to me by my teachers and parents, and I think this is the best gift a teacher of any kind can give to a student. I have a solid…

The most important thing a tutor can do for a student is help them believe in their own ability to learn. When a student gains confidence, they become more willing to try, make mistakes, and keep going — and that’s when real progress happens. A tutor’s job isn’t just to explain concepts, but to create a safe space where the student…

Every student has a different level of grasping knowledge and I think the tutor has to be able to identify this. Not pressurising them to get better and understand the pace that they learn is a very valuable quality in a tutor. Good communication skills and understanding. I’ve been told by my friends and students that I’m good at explaining…

Teach in an understandable, motivating, and enjoyable way. Crucial factors for efficient learning (things as relibaility, punctuality and so on) are all obvious and mandatory to me. Finally, every student has his / her own ways of learning / understanding things, and it is clearly the job of the tutor to find out the most efficient one, to let the…

I believe a tutor can prepare interactive lectures, so that students can participate in the lectures. That technique is very helpful to get the maximum attention of the students. Moreover, a tutor can provide real life example of the topics so that students can easily relate the study contents with the real world. I can easily get synchronized…

I think the most important thing a tutor can do is help a student believe in themselves. A tutor can make a student love the subject he/she hates. The most important thing for a tutor is to understand the student, his/her interests, aptitude, and what he/she is inclined towards. If you have a basic idea of the student mindset you can develop techniques to make them understand the subject in a way they don't find it hard. Gamification…

I think the core role of a tutor is to help students reach their full potential. A tutor should tailor their approach for each student to achieve this. Motivation and confidence are two key elements of student success, if I can support them in achieving a sense of self-efficacy regarding these elements, they are bound to see improvement. Students often know where they fall short in their work, they just need motivation to improve those areas. Once they know that they can achieve this themselves,…

I think the most important thing a tutor can do for a student is to make them feel confident in their understanding, which allows them to be better learners overall. This is done through understanding how they learn things best, whether through diagrams, metaphors, or a direct example of the concept to start. This allows them to build…

Inside BarangarooTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 11 student Ava focused on advanced trigonometry by reviewing her recent test and then moved on to polynomials, tackling chapter exercises and logs.

Year 10 student Tom worked through several lessons on quadratics and linear relations, with sessions dedicated to solving worded problems using algebraic methods.

For a Year 3 primary student, time was spent practising addition and subtraction strategies as well as developing reading comprehension skills through short passages.

Recent Challenges

In Year 8 algebra, one student repeatedly avoided writing full working for rearranging equations—"she said, 'I just get stuck at the start,' and would hesitate to begin unless prompted."

In a senior English assignment, another left their TEEL structure incomplete and was reluctant to link arguments back to topic sentences, resulting in an unfinished draft.

A Year 11 student struggled with domain and range because revision focused only on familiar problems rather than tackling new question types; this left them underprepared for tests requiring flexible thinking.

After setbacks, confidence dropped sharply and questions went unasked, making progress slower than expected.

Recent Achievements

A tutor in Barangaroo recently noticed a big shift with a Year 10 student who, after weeks of hesitation, started tackling circle geometry questions on her own and now attempts problems independently before asking for help.

In a Year 12 session, Martina made real progress—she stopped relying on example solutions and now remembers formulas well enough to solve algebraic fraction questions without prompts.

Meanwhile, a younger primary student who previously stumbled over reading tasks managed to read an entire short paragraph aloud and explain its meaning without assistance.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Customs House Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Fort Street Public School.
