I believe the most important things a tutor can do for a student are to provide clarity, build confidence, and encourage independent thinking. First, a tutor should break down complex topics into simpler terms, making them easier to understand. Second, they should help students build confidence in their abilities by offering positive reinforcement…

Improving the confidence of the student is key. The student should evolve to have more trust in themselves and their abilities and be able to apply this. The most important thing I could do for the student is to help them achieve their own personal best and be motivated to achieve. I am a good listener. I apply this to pinpointing the key areas…

The most important thing a tutor can do for a student is to guide them instead of doing the work for them. It is important for the students to feel that they have control over what they are learning and for them to be encouraged through feedback and practice. I am a very patient, determined and creative person. I can understand what a student…

Encourage and empower the student to continue learning and believe that they can learn the content they are about to learn. Learning is a key to understanding and appreciating the complex beauty of life - enriching the life of the individual. It is one of the key foundations a tutor can establish for their students. A child who has failed to 'keep up' with learning, to understand a concept or course of study, will tend to drop further behind, and attempt to mask…

- Simplify the subject/topic at hand, making a very challenging topic seem approachable and solvable. - Build rapport, and perhaps gain a form of friendship, so that the learning experience seems less like teaching at school/university, and more friendly and relaxed, which is conducive to enjoyable learning. There are a variety of things that makes a tutor stand out and become a real teacher. One is to let the student feel comfortable enough for them to ask questions that they might feel is a basic question. Instilling confidence in them to explore without hesitation and fear is important in the students development. This will help them face their own…

To be supportive and assist in their learning, and help them find the best way to study I think i'm very encouraging when I teach and I also do my best to help students find the answers themselves instead of just giving them answers consistently. Extending beyond the scope of just being a tutor at set times is key for a student’s confidence and rapport building. Knowing they can contact me outside contact hours for small things here and there encourages them to strive to get the most out of their tutoring experience and get better results, for me, for them and for their parents.…

Inside Belgrave HeightsTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 5 student Daniel focused on building speed and confidence with times tables and practiced using coordinates, directions, and map scales.

Year 10 student Vien developed arguments for a practice essay and worked on proofreading homework in preparation for an upcoming SAC.

Meanwhile, Year 11 student Isaac explored scene analysis from *The Princess Bride* in English and strengthened his skills interpreting political cartoons for argument analysis.

Recent Challenges

In Year 11 English, a student hesitated to generate unique examples for essays, tending to latch onto the first idea rather than exploring a wider range—"responding to each question in an original and critical way" was a challenge noted by the tutor.

Meanwhile, a Year 9 student often left writing assignments unfinished or only partially developed, especially conclusions.

In maths (Year 8), one student skipped regular practice at home and struggled to recall methods during lessons; this meant lesson time was spent re-learning instead of moving forward.

For Year 5, untidy handwriting made it hard for teachers to follow his reasoning during comprehension tasks.

Recent Achievements

A Belgrave Heights tutor noticed one high school student started proofreading their own essays for the first time, picking up on unclear paragraphs after previously submitting drafts without checking.

Another secondary student who used to hesitate with complex maths questions now works through new algebra problems independently by the end of each session, only asking for help when truly stuck.

Meanwhile, a younger student who once rushed through spelling tasks is now taking extra time to reread and correct errors, finishing her weekly exercises with noticeably fewer mistakes than before.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Belgrave Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Belgrave South Primary School.
