I believe the most important things a tutor can do are to build the student’s confidence, make learning approachable, and create a safe space where they feel comfortable asking questions. It’s not just about helping them get the right answers, but about helping them understand the why behind what they’re learning. A good tutor should also…

The most crucial role of a tutor is to avoid skipping steps unless the student fully comprehends the material. Observing problem-solving methods can be helpful, but it's the student's grasp of the logical progression behind solving problems that enables them to excel. Inside BellambiTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 11 student 52992 reviewed algebra, trigonometry, and inequalities as part of half-yearly test preparation, also covering significant figures and financial maths calculations.

For Year 10, student 55937 worked on coordinate geometry with a focus on finding perimeters of sectors, plus practiced forming and graphing linear equations.

Meanwhile, in Year 4, student 43575 explored picture graphs (interpreting simple data displays) and began to discuss foundational algebra concepts through informal activities.

Recent Challenges

A Year 8 student repeatedly avoided showing working in maths tasks, insisting that "the answer is enough," which meant calculation errors went unnoticed during revision for algebra inequalities.

In a senior assignment on the Otzi Iceman (History), the same student required step-by-step guidance to begin research and drafting, as one tutor observed, "I had to 'hold his hand' through the writing portion."

For a Year 5 learner, difficulty recalling times tables out of order slowed progress with fraction questions—writing them sequentially was fine, but random recall proved challenging and led to hesitation when new problems appeared.

Recent Achievements

A tutor in Bellambi recently noticed Max tackling his Otzi history assignment with far more persistence than before—he used to give up quickly but now powers through challenging research and essay planning without needing reminders.

Another older student showed real progress in maths, mastering Pythagoras' theorem and like terms after struggling to connect the concepts earlier this term; he even asked for tougher questions on angles.

Meanwhile, Arvon (primary) has shifted from hesitating over addition to solving double-digit sums in his head, completing a set of ten mental calculations correctly during one session.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Corrimal District Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Holy Spirit College.
