I believe the most important thing a tutor can do is allowing a student time to try and solve aspects of the problem themselves following proper guidance, instead of hand-holding them the entire way. This helps build critical thinking skills and allows the student to recognise the roots of the question. A tutor should also be understanding of any…

The most important thing a tutor can do for a student is to provide them with the one-on-one attention that is not given to them in schools with large class sizes. The student needs to be able to feel comfortable enough to ask questions (even the embarrassing ones) and they need to know that the tutor will sit with them for as long as it takes to…

The most important thing of a tutor in my opinion is to foster genuine passion for learning for the students. I believe that the academic success of any student should be self-paced, and the tutor could only help them if they face a too-challenging problem or cannot come up with a plan to achieve their success. Passion to help students, I…

I believe that the tutor's ability to provide multiple scenarios and perspectives when approaching difficult concepts to allow for a diverse understanding and strong base knowledge is extremely important for a student. A tutor should also be able to understand if a student is struggling and be able to help and guide them with patience so the…

I think the most important is to be supportive, from experience the reason that most people struggle with learning is because they give up or don’t think they can. Hence encouragement is key and positive re-enforcement. I also believe that making the student comfortable around you and going through source material in an efficient manner can make…

From my previous experience teaching a lot of students. The most vital point the student wants from their mentor is compassion and sympathy to connect with them. Once I can connect with them, I can understand at what level they are currently in and use the best method to help them strive to the best possible level they can achieve for the given…

I think the biggest thing that a tutor can do is to make the subject interesting for the student so that he/she actually enjoys doing it and does not run away from it. I am very patient and thus multiple queries do not frustrate. I love teaching and therefore I find it amusing to answer their questions. I have different approaches which helped me…

1. When teaching it is important to post assess the students understanding after the lesson was completed. 2. Mistakes should be promptly identified and corrected. 3. It is important to genuinely praise the students efforts , answers in the session as it helps to build confidence. 4. Should be able to adopt accordingly to each student. 5.…

As a tutor, I consider it essential to establish a positive connection not only with the students but also with their parents. It is more significant for a tutor to offer support and guidance to students, leading them toward a beneficial path, rather than imposing additional pressure or burdens on them. In my view, the most important things a tutor can do is listen patiently to the student, guide them in the right direction, build trust, encourage, and support to drive to excellence. I would consider my strength to be that firstly, I establish a rapport with the children which makes them feel comfortable and in a friendly environment. Then I try…

A tutor is not responsible for not passing the exam only, rather he needs to guide the student toward a better future for the student & a wellbeing for the society. I believe that "The teacher is the backbone of the nation". I can understand whether the student really understood or not. "Quality study" is more important than "Quantity study",…

One of the most damaging things one can do as a tutor is establish a blind hierarchy with their student. A tutor does not impart facts and knowledge, he or she attempts to come, along with the student, to a mutual understanding of a concept and I find that much more constructive if you approach this from a peer perspective rather than an…

The most important thing a tutor can do for a student to lift them up what they feel mostly interested while learning anything. I believe that a good tutor has the the ability to help students build confidence for the classroom, and inspire them to be the best that they can be. Another thing that is important to me is not belittling the student or making them feel "stupid" for not understanding, but instead relating to them and helping them find a different way to solve…

In my point of view, a good tutor should be a good listener to students. The tutor should able to fix the student's queries. The qualities like patient, flexible, openness and active are important things for a tutor because the student will observe the tutor and we may influence them at some point. so, it is essential for a tutor to have good…

A good tutor will work themselves out of a job. This is because a good tutor will not only teach the student the content but also how to learn. Therefore the student will be able to become independent of the tutor and then be able to teach other students. I am able to explain concepts clearly and concisely in a number of different ways. Thereby…

Inside BellfieldTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 5 student Ethan worked on converting improper fractions to mixed numbers and representing fractions on a number line, using diagrams for visual understanding.

Year 8 student Olivia focused on indices—practising both positive and negative indices—and revisited measurement concepts including perimeter of circles.

For Year 10, Jacob tackled linear equations and trigonometry basics such as identifying sine, cosine, and tangent ratios in right-angled triangles.

Recent Challenges

A Year 8 student repeatedly guessed answers in maths rather than working them out on paper, with one tutor noting, "He got up several times to play basketball during class."

In Year 10, forgetting to bring textbooks and materials made it difficult to review past challenges—"She needed to bring her maths books so I could see what she had struggled with this week."

Meanwhile, a Year 11 student ran out of time on an exam, missing simple errors due to poor planning. These habits led to lost marks and missed opportunities for targeted feedback in each session.

Recent Achievements

A Bellfield tutor noticed Ollie, a Year 10 student, recently made fewer mistakes on area and perimeter problems by slowing down and using the standard formula they created together—he used to rush through and miss key steps.

In another session, Kiera (Year 11) moved from relying on hints to working through challenging English essay planning almost entirely independently, making her own quote lists for the first time.

Meanwhile, Felix in primary school finally started applying punctuation correctly in his writing without reminders after weeks of forgetting full stops.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Ivanhoe Library & Cultural Hub—or at your child's school (with permission), like St Pius X School.
