Being able to answer questions and be general guidance for a student is most important, especially on the journey to improve marks. I believe having someone you can ask questions to who is not a school teacher can be less daunting than having to ask in class, which will then help boost the confidence of the student. I am a patient person with a…

I believe the most important things an english tutor can do for a student is to foster confidence in their students to independently learn and build confidence in their skills. A tutor should also be able to inspire curiosity so that students become better learners in their field and ask questions. Lastly, the tutor should be flexible to…

Some of the most important things an english tutor can provide for a student in my opinion include; - Have patience - A fun attitude to help make the learning experience enjoyable and to further help understand the difficult concepts they may come across. - Willingness to sacrifice extra time if need be to ensure their student is completely…

A tutor should not just be present to give the student all the answers. Its about building confidence and understanding the student’s way of thinking in order to help them grasp concepts and overcome their academic difficulties. Its about taking on a leadership and mentor role so that you can guide your student, and making them feel comfortable…

I believe if I can make a difference in the student's life such that they are at a better place from when I began teaching them and If I am actually able to see quantifiable results. Then it's really a win win for the both of us. I have very good foundational knowledge on things I prepare to teach. I have very good communication skills which makes…

The biggest thing would be to help students understand that ignorance is not failure. Just because they don't know something "basic", that does not mean they are worse than others, or are stupider, or are not going to succeed. It simply means they were not taught in a way that makes sense to them. This could be for a number of reasons, and not…

Inside BeresfieldTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 6 student Riley worked through converting between decimals, fractions, and percentages, as well as practicing decimal placement in real-world contexts.

In Year 8, Sarah focused on solving straight-line equations using the gradient formula (m) and y-intercept (c), including several advanced exam-style problems on linear relationships.

Meanwhile, Year 9 student Josh practiced factorising quadratic expressions and applying the quadratic formula to solve equations, alongside adding and subtracting algebraic fractions for deeper algebraic fluency.

Recent Challenges

A Year 8 student frequently left calculations unwritten during algebra, making it hard to trace sign errors—she gets the variable signs mixed up when doing algebra, as noted by a tutor.

In Year 10, one student hesitated on worded exam questions and lost confidence with 'ugly' numbers, leading to incomplete answers or freezing mid-task.

For a primary student working on long division, skipping steps and not writing out the process meant forgetting where she was up to; her work became confusing and easy to lose track of.

Lack of written working led directly to repeated mistakes and growing frustration across both levels.

Recent Achievements

One Beresfield tutor noticed a high school student, Rylan, who previously rushed through English assignments, now carefully analyses persuasive techniques and selects quotes to support his answers—a real shift in attention to detail.

Another recent session saw Molly in Year 9 quickly recall algebra concepts from two weeks ago and independently solve advanced questions that had stumped her before.

Meanwhile, Olivia in Year 5, who once hesitated with long division, now works out where each number belongs and subtracts step-by-step without prompting. Last week, she multiplied two large numbers on her own for the first time.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Beresfield Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Beresfield Public School.
