In my point of view, students and tutors must be like a friends so that tutor can teach and student can learn easily. Similarly, every tutor needs to be prepared before they enter in classroom to teach because it will help tutors to express their views in such a way that students can learn and understand easily. Friendly, Responsible, Teaching in…

I find it important for tutors to be able to make a student comfortable to ask them questions and to give wrong answers. The most important way we learn is through seeing our failures and determining what we can do better the next time. Without being able to acknowledge their own mistakes and see how they can do better, students will not be able…

A tutor can intiate the interest in studies in the student and get him/her out of the virtual box of fear that a certain subject is difficult to master. My strength is the vast experience I have as a tutor since last eight years. Also the fact that I have completed higher degrees and this has enabled me to understand various concepts better which…

The most important thing a tutor can do for their students, is to be their friends. It helps providing the students an environment where they can enjoy what they are studying. It helps in eliminating rote learning, which kills the entire joy and purpose of learning and education. My great knowledge and interest in subjects like Math and Physics…

The most important thing a tutor can do for a student is to be patient with each student. Every student has a different starting point and pace, and as tutors, we need to understand this and accommodate for each student. I believe that a strength I have as a tutor is my personal experience, as was recently a high school graduate. This allows me to…

The most important things that a tutor can do for a student that always actively listen to a student and understand lives they live. I do believe that my strengths as a tutor are building strong, personal relationships with students and having specific content expertise. As roughly 2 years providing one-on-one sessions, to what I have learned…

I think the most important thing that a tutor can do for a student is to have them gain confidence with themselves in terms of excelling in school. I think this confidence is important in not just getting high marks in quizzes and tests, but I believe that being confident will help them long-term in solving problems not just in school, even though…

Help them understand the topics and not only do the exercises proposed. I am patient and also persistent, in that I try to explain one topic in several different manners until the other student…

By recognising the challenges students may encounter along their learning journey and demonstrating empathy towards these obstacles, a positive and supportive environment is created between the student and tutor. A tutor has to understand about what kind of learner his/her student is. As the student could be visual learner, a kinesthetic learner, or just an auditory learner, the teacher has to use appropriate teaching methods. I can explain concepts clearly. I can provide numerous real-world examples so that each of the students have understood the…

I feel making a student at ease and making a atmosphere where they can ask any of their query without any hesitance is the most important thing. I believe it's important for tutors to ensure that their students see them as a not only in a 'teacher' role, but someone they could look to advice if they ever feel the need - like a role model, or a mentor. Tutors should help their students gain confidence in their ability to achieve their goals, and by establishing small, achievable milestones…

I've always been hesitant to answer questions in class because I feared being wrong. At home when my parents asked me that same question, I answered without the fear of being wrong. Inside BirrongTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 8 student Jason revised algebraic techniques including expanding and simplifying expressions, then practiced solving linear equations using worked examples.

Year 9 student Sarah focused on coordinate geometry by calculating gradients and reviewing angle properties, while also consolidating her understanding of congruency in triangles for an upcoming test.

For Year 6, Emily worked through problems involving negative numbers and basic algebra revision, using Venn diagrams to reinforce set concepts alongside her number skills.

Recent Challenges

In recent Year 10 and 11 maths sessions, a reluctance to show full working—especially in algebra or trigonometry—meant "it was difficult to backtrack and pinpoint where he went wrong," as one tutor noted.

Incomplete homework has also cropped up; on several occasions, last-minute attempts left William feeling unprepared for new material.

In a Year 9 lesson, frequent calculator use replaced mental computation, particularly with times tables and negative numbers, slowing progress on foundational skills.

When faced with unfamiliar compound interest or index law questions, hesitation led to second-guessing rather than confident problem-solving. This sometimes resulted in missed marks and growing self-doubt during revision.

Recent Achievements

A Birrong tutor noticed one high school student is now spotting and fixing his own algebra mistakes, whereas he used to rely heavily on hints—he recently worked through a set of equations almost entirely unaided.

Another older student, who was previously hesitant with trigonometry, has started applying SOH CAH TOA rules from memory and even drew on earlier topics to tackle trickier trig questions without prompting.

In a Year 5 session, a student began choosing mental strategies over always reaching for the calculator and remembered several algebra question types from past lessons, showing this off by finishing an entire worksheet without outside help.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Regents Park Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Birrong Girls High School.
