Give moral support and guidance. As a tutor, I don't give answers or solve the student's work, I want them to be able to solve it themselves and use their critical thinking skills with their knowledge of subject content. Subjects can be tough, as a tutor, I need to find ways to convey the same subject in an easier, convenient way to understand it.…

The most important thing a tutor can do is help the student become **independent in their thinking**. It’s easy to just show solutions, but that creates dependency. A good tutor instead builds the student’s ability to approach problems on their own—how to think, how to break things down, and how to recover when they’re stuck. That…

As a tutor, when you spend time listening to your students, you start building a relationship with your student. Then, I can begin personalising the learning plan accordingly to the student's needs, interests and strongest points. As a tutor, you have many strengths, the strength to fully understand your students' weaknesses, and then work…

A tutor needs to help identify a student's strong points and motivate the students in every possible way. It's not always the tutor that should be valued and respected but the students also needs the same respect and care. Also, a tutor should know how to boost up the morale of a student when he/she is feeling low. If student is facing some…

I think that a tutor must be patient and remain composed with each student. A tutor is meant to be that person whose teaching is tailored, so it requires an individualized approach, picked up and constantly adjusted as needs change and develop. I have (as told to me by all my ever-suffering associates) a 'wild' vocabulary, and for English…

Firstly, the most important thing that a tutor should do is build up confidence in their kids that they have the potential to achieve their goals and are destined for the best. This instantly boosts up the kids for striving for accuracy and their dreams. Secondly, a tutor should never be a demotivator in any manner. This is important as any…

The most important thing a tutor can do for a student is to build rapport, that way there is respect and trust but most importantly, the tutor can personalize the learning according to how the student learns best. I think the most important things a tutor can do is a) be consistent and persistent - constantly show up, be willing to explain things 100 times if that's what is needed. The student needs to have faith in you. And b) build confidence - tutoring isn't a short term option, by teaching them the skills of how to attack problems they don't understand,…

Inside BolivarTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 5 student Tom focused on calculating area for both simple and composite shapes, as well as reviewing key area formulas.

Year 9 student Archie worked through simplifying ratios and revisited BIDMAS and fractions after receiving his test results.

Meanwhile, Isobel in Year 10 tackled converting fractions to percentages alongside practising addition and subtraction with fractions, using real-world examples where possible.

Recent Challenges

In Year 3 maths, a student often left place value work incomplete and struggled to justify number patterns—"she can answer but doesn't understand why," noted a tutor. This made follow-up questions on sequences difficult.

By Year 7, another student hesitated to talk through problem-solving steps in composite shapes, preferring to guess rather than explain reasoning, which led to confusion when units or operations were missed.

In senior years (Year 11), heavy reliance on calculators replaced working out multiplication by hand, especially during exam-style questions; as one tutor observed, "she wasn't confident with arithmetic and defaulted straight to the calculator."

Recent Achievements

A Bolivar tutor noticed a big shift in a Year 10 student who used to rush through maths problems and overlook mistakes; now, she's gotten into the habit of backchecking her work and caught every error herself last session.

Another high school student recently began talking through his approach out loud—he'd usually stay quiet and guess before, but now he explains his thinking and spots where he might go wrong.

Meanwhile, a Year 4 student who once struggled with reading analogue clocks can now both read times accurately and confidently draw clock hands when asked.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Burton Community Hub Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like The Pines School.
