I think as much as it has to do with academics, it has a lot to do with mental health and the overall well-being of the student, too. They don't necessarily have to tell a tutor anything; they just need to know that this is someone they could potentially confide in. This also helps boost academic progress. And for a more technical aspect of…

I believe the most important things a tutor can do for a student are to provide support and help build their confidence. A tutor should be a steady source of encouragement, reinforcing that mistakes are part of learning and that progress comes with persistence. By creating a positive, judgment-free environment, a tutor can help students believe in…

Engage and excite. If I can get someone excited about maths or science or even just one question, then they’re going to remember it. Also just a good role model, letting a student know they can message if they have questions or talk to me about things they don’t feel comfortable with. I’ve worked with, and feel comfortable, tutoring kids…

Be able to understand that not every student is the same. Everyone's unique and their learning styles are different, so approaching every student with the same method to teach is not a good idea. Making sure to recognize the strengths and weaknesses of each individual student and tutor according to their strengths and weaknesses. Finally, the…

In my opinion, a good tutor is one who aims to get to know the student personally in order to use the best approach towards understanding difficult topics and concepts. It’s also important to provide encouragement and support, as well as understand that students might get frustrated or discouraged if they are unable to easily grasp a concept. I…

I believe a tutor plays a crucial role in molding a student's academic journey, aside from their time spent at school. It is imperative to build a good working relationship with the student, which will aid the student in being comfortable and clarifying all doubts. This is important because I have met many students who are under the assumption…

Equip them with the ability to eventually solve problems independently. At the end of the day, the role of tutoring is to help students foster independent thinking so they can overcome academic challenges on their own, because being self-sufficient is important. Also, I try to foster enthusiasm in the subjects being taught, so students can…

Enhance students' confidence in their academic ability and empower them to achieve their dreams. I believe this is the most important thing as eventually, a student will cease tutoring, however, if you instil in students a positive mindset towards learning and a belief in themselves, they will be able to motivate themselves to achieve their…

I believe that a tutor must be flexible and patient, as all students' needs are different. They have to be persistent and encouraging, and make sure that any success is emphasised and also improved upon. The tutor should not only help the student to understand their coursework, but also help them to implement their own study plans and methods, so…

Always be as clear with them as possible, and be ready for whatever questions they might have for you. Remember to always be challenging the student, but only a little bit at a time so they don't feel overwhelmed. Also important is to make sure they celebrate when they make progress so that they don't have to wait until their next test or exam…

I think a tutor must be understanding and helpful. Finding innovative ways to teach and repeat the same concept. If the teacher teaches the student something and I as the tutor say the same thing, there is no understanding that would be gained. It is important to understand exactly what the student is not clear or sure about and clear those doubts…

Academically, I want to be able to build a student's confidence in their mastery of the subject, and familiarize the students with questions that may come up in an exam. This is done as I'll get to know the student and create a positive, engaging study atmosphere during the session. Non-academically, I want to help students make studying and their…

In addition to increasing the student's confidence in his/her academic prowess through his/her understanding of a difficult concept, a tutor may also help incite the innate curiosity of a life-long learner. Likewise, not only does a tutor help achieve and maintain academic excellence, but also build sustainable life-long skills that may aid the…

Inside BraesideTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 7 student Grace focused on adding fractions with different denominators and expressing percentage change, using visual aids to clarify concepts.

In Year 10, Jack worked on factorising trinomials—including both monic and non-monic forms—and used the quadratic formula to solve challenging equations.

For VCE Further Maths, Mia revised matrices through practice worksheets and tackled financial maths and data analysis questions aligned with her current school topics.

Recent Challenges

A Year 12 Physics student relied on prompts to recall electromagnetism formulas; as one tutor noted, "he only vaguely remembered equations unless shown," which made tackling unfamiliar problems slow and uncertain.

In Year 11 Methods, another student attempted all steps in their head when rearranging algebraic equations, but skipped showing working—leading to hidden sign errors and lost marks.

A younger student in Year 5 found switching between Bitpaper and Zoom on the iPad distracting, erasing annotations mid-explanation instead of focusing on content.

These process obstacles left students second-guessing themselves during assessments and slowed progress through more advanced topics.

Recent Achievements

A tutor in Braeside noticed a real shift with one Year 10 student who previously struggled to connect algebraic concepts—she now independently completes quadratic factorisation and even plugs her solutions directly into equations without prompting.

In Year 12 physics, another student who was hesitant about applying formulas is now confidently answering questions involving magnetic fields, accurately using the left-hand rule and explaining split ring commutators.

Meanwhile, a younger primary student has begun finishing all her homework with neat formatting and started back-checking her own answers—a big step up from last term's reluctance to review her work.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Kingston Information & Library Service—or at your child's school (with permission), like St Louis de Montfort's School.
