Always be as clear with them as possible, and be ready for whatever questions they might have for you. Remember to always be challenging the student, but only a little bit at a time so they don't feel overwhelmed. Also important is to make sure they celebrate when they make progress so that they don't have to wait until their next test or exam (which they may initially be dreading) to feel satisfaction for their efforts.
