I believe that one of the most important things a tutor can do for a student is to explain the concept behind a problem more thoroughly than do the problem itself with them. This can be achieved by breaking up a complex problem, which may rely on more than one mathematical concept such as trig and calculus. By splitting up the parts of the…

Be approachable and pay attention. It's very hard to put your own worldview aside when it comes to knowledge, and many people are likely not even cognisant of that, but you need to understand that you know things that the child doesn't even know what they don't know. I make learning a bit more laid back and approachable. My strength is in relating…

I believe that it is important for a tutor to have trust in, and give confidence to their student to help them reach their potential. Tutors should be supportive towards their students and do their best to answer any questions the student may have and provide resources to help them with their learning. I believe my main strength would be active…

Being supportive and patient because it can be difficult for a tutor to see how hard the high school level maths can be for the student. Tutors need to remember how they did when they did the same maths years ago for their HSC/school and how difficult it was back then as opposed to how simple it seems now. As a maths tutor, I understand how…

I think a tutor can give a student confidence, that a student doesn't need to be intimidated by a STEM class. The general attitude that these subject are 'too hard' or that a student 'will never use these skills again' sets up bright students for failure before they even set foot in a classroom. The most important thing a tutor can do is boost a…

To be able to enable to student to think, and answer hard questions when all else has failed. I consider instilling a growth mindset into a student is very important as that is the only way a student will see growth and start to succeed. With a positive mindset, students can embrace mistakes and see them as a learning curve to success. Additionally, building confidence in a student is also very important as it helps them overcome…

I think it would be acknowledging the difficulty in subjects to know that they aren't alone with their difficulties and also being able to explain to them the content of their subjects in new ways that makes sense to them. Paola is fantastic. Even after a few lessons my little boy has started to grasp maths issues that were once challenging for him. I can't wait to see his progress after a few months. Paola has engaged with Lucas and has become a trusted advisor. Thanks again Paola!

Inside CarindaleTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 11 student Helena explored compound interest calculations and the use of recurrence relations in finance maths, practising with real-life formula applications.

For Year 10, revision with Chloe focused on balancing complex chemical equations and solving stoichiometry problems involving limiting and excess reagents.

Meanwhile, Year 6 student Daniel worked on multiplying fractions and dividing fractions, using diagrams to clarify each step.

Recent Challenges

Relied heavily on solving limiting reagent questions in a single step without writing out working, which led to frequent sign errors—"rushes every question, needs to write his working out instead of solving questions in one go."

A Year 10 English student's assignment draft showed missing punctuation and lacked coherence, making feedback harder to act on.

In Year 6 Maths, mental multiplication was attempted quickly but with inconsistent handwriting and forgotten steps during multi-digit calculations.

For a senior Science report, the absence of formal justification for chosen methods left some conclusions unsupported by evidence.

Recent Achievements

A tutor in Carindale noticed a Year 11 student who started out confused about simple interest but, after working through real-life savings examples, could independently solve several questions by the end of the session.

In another high school lesson, a Year 10 student who previously struggled with index laws was able to explain and apply them correctly while tackling linear equations.

Meanwhile, one younger student made a subtle but important shift—she began telling her tutor exactly which maths concepts she wanted help with, instead of waiting to be prompted, and finished all her set problems on her own.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Carindale Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Carina State School.
