This way, the tutoring will become effective and help the students to actually achieve their academic goals. My strength as a tutor is definitely my patience. It can be hard to understand…

The most important things I can provided to the student are an approachable, enriching learning environment. An enriching learning environment is like a petri-dish full of nutrients. The role of tutors is to help the students absorb as much of these 'nutrients' (i.e. knowledge and skills) as they can in an effective and enjoyable way. I believe my…

I believe the most important things a tutor can do is in attitude, example and commitment. I consider that a positive attitude of high expectations for the student, an example of diligent study and learning, and challenges for the student to accomplish without the tutor's presence is essential in motivating, understanding and internalising key…

A tutor must be able to provide logical reasoning to support an argument. A tutor must also believe in his student in order to unlock his/her full potential to get the most out of the one on one learning experience. Confidently communicate with students in a one on one situation to explain about the complexity of a problem in-depth. Provide…

Never give up on the students. Everyone is different and has different capabilities. They take varied amount of time to grasp a concept. Knowing that tutor is there for you, no matter the time taken, is a huge relief for a student. I understand and prepare the subjects by myself before explaining to others which gives me clarity of thought. I have…

I consider persistence to be the most important thing a tutor can do for a student. Every student has a weakness in some subject, so persistence and striving to teach them despite setbacks or failure is an integral part of their eventual success. This also demonstrates to the student that their success is important to you, which is also extremely…

When I was a student, I had many tutors who helped me as a mentor and guided me through not just schoolwork but also the ups and downs in friendships with other students and relations with teachers. Hence, I believe that the most important things a tutor can do for a student is to be there emotionally and help them grow as a person. Although…

The confidence and discipline that tutors can help student build. Also to lead and motivate students to understand the purpose of what they are studying rather than mindlessly teach the content. The role of a tutor is to enable the student’s ability to digest and retain information, no matter who is teaching, by identifying the study styles that are most efficient for that student. This builds their confidence in learning and thus allows them to enjoy the subject, because they have a comprehensive knowledge of how to solve any issue. I…

I value tutors as being mentors who students look up to for advice and as a role model, whilst revealing a students' true potential which in turn improves self-confidence and self-esteem. For instance, I think the evolving of students' enjoyment towards subjects, even ever so slightly, is one of the most valuable things an inspiring and supportive…

The most important thing a tutor can do is to be empathetic and understand how the student learns to be able to teach them in a meaningful way. The best way to teach a student is to give them the time and attention they need to learn that they otherwise wouldn't get in a class of 20-30 students. Tutors also have to be able to make the student…

Education as a whole is constructed upon two pillars, those being understanding and impetus. Tutors have an obligation to each of their pupils to provide materials and instruction to facilitate both. Without a degree of comprehension, students are susceptible to establish an unhealthy relationship with their academia and it is crucial that the…

Inside CarlingfordTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 7 student Alice focused on solving ratio word problems and worked through homework covering basic algebraic equations.

For Year 9, Daniel practised using angle rules for parallel lines and calculated the area of polygons as part of his current schoolwork.

In Year 11, Michael completed revision on probability and interest topics, including working through several trial paper questions to prepare for upcoming assessments.

Recent Challenges

A Year 7 student struggled to recall key decimal and unit conversion rules, which slowed progress in multi-step maths questions—"he needed a breakdown and stronger understanding of certain concepts."

Meanwhile, a senior student preparing for financial maths became stuck when analysing payment tables, hesitating over which formula to use and losing valuable test time.

In English, one high schooler's motivation dipped after setbacks with creative writing, making it harder to experiment with new techniques.

At primary level, a child repeatedly forgot homework due to focusing on practice tests; this left gaps in revision and caused confusion when similar topics reappeared.

Recent Achievements

One Carlingford tutor noticed a Year 10 student who used to make frequent "silly mistakes" in maths now actively checks his working for errors and spends more time reading questions before answering.

In Year 11, a student who previously hesitated with annuities is confidently using future value tables on her own and tackling harder examples without prompting.

Meanwhile, a Year 5 student who struggled with rounding numbers has started explaining the rounding process out loud before solving, showing new independence during problem-solving. Last session, she rounded up to the nearest ten and completed all calculations correctly without reminders.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Carlingford Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like James Ruse Agricultural High School.
