The most important thing a tutor can do for a student is grow their confidence in the subject matter so that they know, with work, they will understand what their teacher is telling them and succeed rather than constantly feeling defeated. I believe my main strength as a tutor will be my ability to communicate with students. It is important not to…

I think the best thing a tutor can do for their students is show that they are interested in them as individuals. I think tutors should find out what their students are interested in and use this as a tool in teaching. Being able to make a connection like this makes the experience more enjoyable and educational for both student and tutor. I think…

A tutor needs to be able to properly communicate with their student and teach them to solve hard problems instead of solving it for them. Furthermore, I believe that a tutor needs to have empathy for the student as some topics can be hard to understand and require patience to fully grasp. Overall, I believe that a tutor needs to be able to work…

Be diligent and rigorous, making sure that they understand the fine details of what their are doing and why it is important, and not only just how to answer memorised questions. I am patient and persistent, and make sure that students understand everything in order to succeed in their subject. I am also knowledgeable in my specialty subjects as I…

Educators play an important role in how students minds are shaped and how they approach problems in their studies. Believing in students that they can achieve their goal is one of the most important aspects of teaching them so it encourages them to strive towards their goal rather than realise they aren't capable enough. Watching them set out a…

In my opinion it is extremely important to ensure the learner knows that it is safe to not succeed at first as learning is a process full of unsuccessful attempts. This will allow students to participate fearlessly in a tutoring session. Building that trust and relationship with students is an integral part of tutoring. It will enable students to…

The most important thing that a tutor can do for a student is to give them the confidence to participate in class activities outside of the tutoring session. My most valued moments of tutoring my maths student are when she came back to a session and told me that she participated in class discussions and answered questions in class. I believe it is…

I consider the most important thing a tutor can do for a student is to never patronise them, and always show a keen interest (not just aptitude) in the tutored subject. I think my strengths as a tutor are patience, sincerity, kindness, and a high understanding of and passion for English as a subject of…

Inside ChandlerTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 10 student Olivia revised simple interest calculations for a maths assignment and practised applying the formula to different worded problems.

For Year 11, Marcus worked on matrix operations including addition, scalar multiplication, and identifying when multiplication is possible, as well as using matrices to solve simultaneous equations.

Meanwhile, Year 12 student Sam focused on revising logarithmic and exponential equations—solving both algebraically and with worded population growth problems—and practised graph transformations of log and exponential functions with attention to domain and range.

Recent Challenges

In Year 8 mathematics, one student frequently rushed through questions without showing working, which led to repeated calculation errors; as noted, "needs to write his working out instead of solving questions in one go."

In Year 10 algebra sessions, confusion arose when isolating variables or deciding which method to use first—verbalising steps and drawing diagrams often clarified the path forward.

A senior student preparing for assessments sometimes arrived with incomplete materials and loose notes, making it harder to cross-check solutions or review feedback efficiently.

When writing reports in Year 11, disorganised sentence structure obscured mathematical reasoning and justification of methods used.

Recent Achievements

One Chandler tutor saw a Year 10 student move from confusion to confidence with simple interest after using real-life savings account examples; by the end of the session, he worked through several problems independently and even chose to add an extra weekly lesson.

A Year 11 student, who previously hesitated to ask questions, has started taking active notes and now attempts Venn diagram word problems on her own without prompting.

Meanwhile, a younger primary student has begun completing multiplication tables up to 11x3 digits quickly—something that took much longer in earlier sessions.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Capalaba Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Gumdale State School.
