If a tutor can maintain a professional friendship with a student while focusing on the learning or task at hand, then the student is much more likely to share the enthusiasm with the tutor. I am enthusiastic about learning and communicating my knowledge with others. I am patient and able to adapt to different learning styles. Furthermore, I…

Having been a student myself, the greatest feeling when coming away from my tutor was a feeling of relief and greater understanding. I believe the most important thing a tutor can do for a student is simply make them feel more confident in approaching and applying concepts to questions. I believe my strengths as a tutor would be my ability to…

I believe the most important thing a tutor can do for a student is to help them grow not only as a student, but as a person. In my previous experience, I have found that oftentimes a student who achieves average academic results often does so due to fears of failure, or perhaps disinterest in the subject. I believe that the tutor can be paramount…

To recognise the student's limits, and to help them reach beyond them. A tutor should set realistic goals for students to help them stay motivated and to make progress in their learning, however, they should also encourage students to achieve higher through effective communication and tutoring support. As the student's needs should be a tutor's…

I believe the most important thing a tutor can do is to make the subject matter enjoyable for students. 1. I believe my strengths would be being able to empathise with students, having a positive attitude towards learning, teaching and my subject, I have excellent communication skills and I'm patient and tolerant. 2. While I was a peer tutor, I…

A tutor must give a student confidence and help them to not be overwhelmed by new topics. Once a student believes they can learn something, it is much easier to actually learn it. Tutors must also be personal and understand what method of teaching is most effective for each individual. As a recently graduated student, I am able to understand how…

A tutor must be patient and listen to how the student feels and explains their material. Without this we can't understand where the gaps are in the students knowledge OR whether they really do understand, but just in a different way. I have infinite patience, I can adjust my communication style, and I when faced with something unfamiliar I have…

I think a common misconception about a tutor's job is that their whole purpose is to get their tutee an A+. While this is obviously a wonderful side-effect of tutoring, the most important thing a tutor can do is to develop and improve a student's ability to problem-solve, learn, and work effectively to complete their academic goals. The difference…

I think the most important thing a tutor can do for a student is give them confidence. When a student has confidence they are willing to try and take risks and this is when learning can take place. Acoording to me the most important thing a tutor can do for a student is make a positive impact on his life by not forcing the society standards for learning and growing as every child has a different mind and way of approach to things around them. A tutor is one of the best person who can analyse this and make learning a creative activity instead…

I believe it is integral to grasp the individual students learning style and tailor my lessons accordingly. As a part of this, it's also important to learn what doesn't work for them, and avoid these techniques. For example, an English teacher might teach them poetic terms by getting the student to write out definitions. If a students doesn't…

A tutor plays a crucial role in a student's learning journey, and there are several important things a tutor can do to effectively support their students: Every student is unique. A good tutor takes the time to understand the student's learning style, strengths, weaknesses, and goals. This understanding helps tailor the tutoring sessions to meet…

Listen to what they need, and what they are struggling with. Be patient if they don't understand something at first, and if they are still struggling with the concept after a while, trying teaching it to them in a different way so that they do understand. I think the most important thing a tutor can do for a student is not just to teach them content - its essential to help a student become more self-sufficient in the field they are studying, and to teach them how to learn more effectively. For example, when teaching a child mathematics, I view simply teaching the content as not enough, as if you…

Inside Chermside WestTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 7 student Grace focused on simplifying algebraic fractions and practiced factorising and simplifying expressions using worked examples.

Year 9 student Liam completed a statistics assignment by constructing and interpreting stem-and-leaf plots, then compared data sets using box plots to analyse spread and median.

Meanwhile, Year 10 student Olivia tackled the start of her statistics unit by distinguishing between categorical and numerical data (including ordinal vs nominal, continuous vs discrete), working through classification questions with real-world examples.

Recent Challenges

In Year 8, a student left key math materials at school due to the swimming carnival and couldn't review speed formula strategies as planned—this delay meant less practice ahead of an upcoming exam.

A Year 10 learner, after receiving quiz results, "didn't fully look through quiz results—will do that next time," missing a chance to address specific errors before moving on.

For a senior student working on biology, mixing up which body system barriers belonged in each line of defence led to repeated confusion across multiple systems; the overlapping topics seemed overwhelming without regular review.

In Year 11 maths, one student forgot to transfer formulas between their grid and lined books: "Could help with remembering what formulas you may need for the exam."

These moments show how organization lapses or not responding promptly to feedback can quietly limit progress or create last-minute stress when exams approach.

Recent Achievements

A Chermside West tutoring session saw a Year 10 student, Skyla, independently prepare questions ahead of time and now actively ask for help—something she previously hesitated to do.

In Year 8 maths, Claudia started recognising mistakes in converting units between lessons and now corrects them on her own during problem-solving.

Meanwhile, a primary school student, Lila, who used to get stuck placing negative numbers on a number line, can now confidently order both positive and negative values without prompting and completed her latest number line activity with no errors.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Chermside Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Craigslea State High School.
