Helping students understand that they are capable of overcoming their difficulties with the subject. Helping them to identify what they need to improve in order to perform better. Teaching them that their efforts are worth it and that they can achieve their goals if they work hard. Many students give up before trying, so I think this is the first…

The most important thing for a tutor to do for a student is be there as a support, guide and motivator. Ideally, a tutor should be able to model and share learning experiences that are genuine and authentic to the student. I am personable and try to ensure all my learning experiences can be applied to the real world. I am patient and considerate…

I believe the most important thing a tutor can do for a student is to listen. I believe listening is very important since if you don't listen to your student, or get them to explain concepts for themselves, you won't be able to deduce which areas to focus on. One of my weaknesses as a tutor would have to be that if my student is having difficulty,…

The most important thing a tutor can do is to listen to the student, as well as teaching. Encouraging the student to provide their input on a topic without having any pretentious predelection will allow the student to become more confident in their learning. I have the ability to gage the student's difficulty and work with them from that level.…

A tutor is somebody who is most significantly; approachable. While a student can learn from a thousand different ways , a tutor is meant to expose them to those ways so that they achieve their goals. Keeping the deadlines in check, their is a responsibility to make sure that all of the essential learning is checked off the list to…

The most important things a tutor can do is to understand how their student learns, be knowledgeable on the subject, and above all try. Understanding the subject matter is important but if there is no effort to adapt to the student then it is usually a waste of time. I am flexible around teaching styles and explanations of concepts. I can assist…

To me, one of the most important thing a tutor can do for a student is to give the student confidence. When a student gains confidence that they can do it, they will be more willing to put effort and also do better in their examinations. I would say my strength as a tutor is to be able to get into the studnets's level and explain to them in a way…

Having been a student myself, the greatest feeling when coming away from my tutor was a feeling of relief and greater understanding. To recognise the student's limits, and to help them reach beyond them. A tutor should set realistic goals for students to help them stay motivated and to make progress in their learning, however, they should also encourage students to achieve higher through effective communication and tutoring support. I believe the most important thing a tutor can do is to make the subject matter enjoyable for students. 1. While I was a peer tutor, I…

In the teaching phase, student-focused teaching would be my method of teaching, which is to discover what the students need instead of dumping knowledge, whilst showing respect and understanding. When a student raises concerns about a question, which I assume in maths and sciences usually composites of concepts from multiple areas of study, I…

Showing patience and understanding is key as no two students are the same. Different students have different struggles, and this should be understood by the tutor. It is also crucial to provide a comfortable, judgement-free environment for the student so they can feel free to try their best and ask for help whenever needed without fear of failure…

A tutor must give a student confidence and help them to not be overwhelmed by new topics. Once a student believes they can learn something, it is much easier to actually learn it. Tutors must also be personal and understand what method of teaching is most effective for each individual. As a recently graduated student, I am able to understand how…

I think the main role of a tutor is encouraging confidence in their students. I have found that most of the time my students know the answer, they're just too afraid to say it. Or they may be on the right track and need a little guidance to fully understand a concept, making problem solving skills another thing that I try to pass on to my…

I think a common misconception about a tutor's job is that their whole purpose is to get their tutee an A+. While this is obviously a wonderful side-effect of tutoring, the most important thing a tutor can do is to develop and improve a student's ability to problem-solve, learn, and work effectively to complete their academic goals. The difference…

A tutor must be patient and listen to how the student feels and explains their material. Without this we can't understand where the gaps are in the students knowledge OR whether they really do understand, but just in a different way. Inside Chermside WestTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 7 student Grace focused on simplifying algebraic fractions and practiced factorising and simplifying expressions using worked examples.

Year 9 student Liam completed a statistics assignment by constructing and interpreting stem-and-leaf plots, then compared data sets using box plots to analyse spread and median.

Meanwhile, Year 10 student Olivia tackled the start of her statistics unit by distinguishing between categorical and numerical data (including ordinal vs nominal, continuous vs discrete), working through classification questions with real-world examples.

Recent Challenges

In Year 8, a student left key math materials at school due to the swimming carnival and couldn't review speed formula strategies as planned—this delay meant less practice ahead of an upcoming exam.

A Year 10 learner, after receiving quiz results, "didn't fully look through quiz results—will do that next time," missing a chance to address specific errors before moving on.

For a senior student working on biology, mixing up which body system barriers belonged in each line of defence led to repeated confusion across multiple systems; the overlapping topics seemed overwhelming without regular review.

In Year 11 maths, one student forgot to transfer formulas between their grid and lined books: "Could help with remembering what formulas you may need for the exam."

These moments show how organization lapses or not responding promptly to feedback can quietly limit progress or create last-minute stress when exams approach.

Recent Achievements

A Chermside West tutoring session saw a Year 10 student, Skyla, independently prepare questions ahead of time and now actively ask for help—something she previously hesitated to do.

In Year 8 maths, Claudia started recognising mistakes in converting units between lessons and now corrects them on her own during problem-solving.

Meanwhile, a primary school student, Lila, who used to get stuck placing negative numbers on a number line, can now confidently order both positive and negative values without prompting and completed her latest number line activity with no errors.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Chermside Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Craigslea State High School.
