A tutor must understand their students strengths and weaknesse. They must help them clear their queries and must have great patience in hearing them. They should have a good knowledge about the topics they gonna cover. I love Math. So I believe I can tutor children well. I love clearing doubts and I enjoy asking me questions about the topics we…

I think the most important things I can do for a student revolve around mentorship. Being a tutor is not just about imparting information and tips to the student. It is recognising the student as a whole, looking after their mental wellbeing, and ensuring that what they're learning is being tailored to them, rather than a cookie-cut approach. A…

Help them understand and not let them feel helpless. A lot of kids feel helpless when learning and it's extremely important for tutors to let them know that they aren't and teach them other ways to learn that are more helpful for them. My strengths are most definitely adapting to any situation and my patience. I understand that people may struggle…

To me, the most important thing as a tutor is to listen. Students sometimes find it difficult to express their struggles so being patient is very important when understanding how to best help a student. I have had experience with mentoring children in the AFL community and have learnt skills in effective communicating and patience especially with…

The most important thing a tutor can do for a student is to build their full confidence. Knowledge can bring confidence and strength to a person. It would be their foundation to trust themselves, be confident, be happy and be satisfied with their lives. We as tutor our extended parents of the students. A person they can depend and rely on. My…

Confidence. A great tutor doesn't just teach the subject, they help the student believe they can master it. That shift in mindset is what drives real progress. One of my biggest strengths as a tutor is my ability to explain complex ideas in a simple, clear way. Because I'm studying mechanical engineering, I had to learn how to break down difficult…

I believe the most important things a tutor can do are: 1) provide clarity, 2) build confidence, and 3) foster independent thinking. A good tutor doesn't just help students get the right answers, they help students understand the process and develop the skills to tackle future challenges on their own. Encouraging students to ask questions, think…

I think the most important thing is patience as not all students are fast learner. Sometimes repetition is needed in tutoring and we need to stay calm and cool while explaining it repeatedly. Also, communication skills are essential. A good tutor knows how to deliver the subject so that it is easy to be understood by the student. 1. Patience 2.…

In addition to inculcating academic knowledge in students, a tutor can help students become more passionate towards a subject and can enable the student to grow as a holistic individual by providing moral support and mentorship for the student and helping the student grow in his/her values. To be able to identify the students strengths and weaknesses before coming up with a teaching method that is suitable to their most preferred way of learning and the way of learning that they would be able to benefit most from. A tutor should know the student's learning style well and be able to cater to their needs. A tutor should also provide a strong foundation to the subjects so that students can build upon this foundation and practice and get better in the future. A tutor should also build good, consistent study habits in the student, and build up the student's…

Inside ChurchlandsTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 5 student Tom focused on converting between mixed, proper, and improper fractions as well as decimals, including how to move back and forth between these forms in maths; for English, he explored the structure of autobiographies versus biographies and discussed how point of view changes storytelling.

Year 7 student Grace worked on prime factorization and Lowest Common Multiple problems using worded examples in maths, while in English she practiced writing persuasive texts by constructing rebuttals without relying too much on hyperbole.

Meanwhile, Year 8 student Ben tackled algebraic bracket expansion and rearranging both sides of equations in maths, then switched to English for brainstorming narrative story ideas based on specific prompts.

Recent Challenges

Several high school students demonstrated a need for neater, more organized written work in maths.

For instance, one Year 9 student's "layout is all over the place" when working through ratio and division problems, which led to confusion and extra errors.

In Year 10, skipping steps or relying on mental calculations during algebra—"tries to solve things in his head rather than writing them out"—resulted in sign mistakes that slowed progress.

At the senior level, a student facing NAPLAN struggled under time pressure and became frustrated after not reading questions closely enough; this left him unable to finish the test.

Recent Achievements

One Churchlands tutor noticed a Year 9 student who previously rushed through algebra is now pausing to expand brackets step-by-step, showing much better focus and accuracy.

A high schooler in another session began independently self-editing their narrative writing by reading it aloud—something they'd been reluctant to try before—which helped catch grammar slips without prompting.

Meanwhile, a Year 4 student who used to guess unfamiliar words now regularly asks for help sounding them out, tackling new texts with far fewer hesitations.

Last week, that same student finished reading a full chapter aloud with only one minor stumble.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Cambridge Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Churchlands Senior High School.
