The most important thing a tutor can do is build a student's confidence and belief in their own ability. Most students are capable; they just need someone who recognises their potential, supports them, and helps them see it for themselves. My key strengths as a tutor are my communication skills and my ability to explain concepts clearly and in…

It is important for tutors to explain the concept in a way that gives the student true understanding rather than just a shortcut for test questions. This way the student can apply that knowledge to different situations. I've tutored my younger siblings throughout school so I'm good at working with kids who like to complain that it's too hard. I'm…

I think the most important thing a tutor can do is to teach a student how to pursue their own studies, that is, if I can teach a student how to study without the need for a tutor, that's worth more than tutoring them the whole year and it will serve them well for the rest of their life. An excellent tutor will keep their students motivated and…

The tutor should understand his subject matter to be able to deliver complicated ideas to the students simply and concisely. If the tutor cannot do so, he should further his knowledge of that subject matter. I love to use descriptive and outside the box methods to understand mathematical concepts. Over the course of a tutor's time with a student, the most important skill they can provide is the ability to think both critically and universally, fueled by a hunger for knowledge. That is to say, both a stronger and more capable work ethic. Analysing how a student mentally approaches problems, communicating to them precisely what their…

The most important thing a tutor can do is guide and show the path to the student. By showing the path, the student can learn to walk on it once. Then when they practice enough with that same technique, they can walk along that path by themselves. My strengths are the techniques in how I tutor and my patience with the people I tutor. Every kid learns differently and a traditional classroom with only one teacher doesn't allow much time to re-explain all the lessons in different ways. The most important part about tutoring is learning how your student takes in information and finding fun ways to get them engaged with the content. I am young and relatable. Which can create an…

Inside JolimontTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 7 student Jimmy focused on building confidence while tackling activities to assess maths skills and identify any learning gaps, including revision of factors and subtraction with zeros.

For Year 9, Ava worked through trigonometry basics using practice questions and also reviewed essay structure and language features in poetry analysis.

Meanwhile, Year 10 student Lily prepared for an upcoming maths test by learning to draw and analyse piecewise functions as well as reviewing simultaneous equations and pinpointing areas for exam improvement.

Recent Challenges

Repeatedly did not complete homework, and when tired, needed concepts explained multiple times; "needs to learn how to take proper notes" was a key observation for this Year 8 student.

In Year 11 Chemistry, reliance on looking up formulas slowed progress—there's a pattern of needing more independent recall when faced with new types of questions.

For a Year 5 learner, missed homework meant less time spent on consolidating fraction operations, leaving gaps in later lessons.

In English (Year 10), anxiety about writing ideas clearly led to hesitation putting thoughts onto paper and weaker quote analysis during essays.

Recent Achievements

One Jolimont tutor saw a Year 11 student finally crack trigonometry questions that had stumped her for weeks—she confidently used the "write the rule, substitute and solve" method without prompting.

In a separate high school English session, another student who used to rush through analysis now took time to select quotes thoughtfully and wrote a strong opening for her speech using language devices more effectively.

Meanwhile, in Year 5 maths, Jimmy—who'd previously struggled with borrowing when subtracting from zero—was able to apply the strategy smoothly and completed several problems correctly on his own.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Subiaco Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Jolimont Primary School.
