As i was mentoring students at Curtin i got to realise that being a form of support not only academically but also forming a relationship with the student is the most important thing a tutor can do. Providing room for human connection and cheering the student on . I am often described as an observant and good listener, which allows me to…

I think it is very important for a tutor to be friendly and encouraging, to establish a good rapport with the student. It is important for a tutor to explain things in a way that the student is able to understand at their level, and to help the student to actually understand what is going on, rather than merely memorising formulas to pass a test.…

I think the most important things a tutor can do for a student is to create a memorable way to explain concepts in a meaningful way that they can remember. I believe to succeed in courses, it is much more important to learn how and why an answer is solved or attained in a certain way, rather than just learn to look for specific factors that tell…

Tutors can and should empower their students with confidence. Confidence is a can-do attitude resulting from the accumulation of victories. Tutors provide students with opportunities to improve their knowledge base and have numerous victories in the process. These accumulate into a can-do attitude that sets up students for further success in all…

The most essential part of tutoring is being able to explain the principles behind each concept so that it is fully understood by the student. Once the student has full understanding of a concept, and how it links to other ideas not necessarily within the defined limits of the course, they will be able to remember better and explain the necessary…

Magali, West Leederville

Inside West LeedervilleTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 6 student Ava focused on converting between decimals and fractions as well as practising division with decimals.

Year 10 student Lewis worked through practical applications of quadratics, creating a page of summary notes to prepare for his exam.

For Year 12, Emily tackled calculus skills such as maximising and minimising functions using differentiation, along with kinematics problems involving motion graphs.

Recent Challenges

In Year 8, one student often skipped drawing diagrams for trigonometry questions, which made it harder to spot angle domains and led to repeated errors.

During a Year 10 test, forgetting to keep track of units meant extra time was spent correcting conversions rather than moving forward with the main problems.

A senior (Year 12) learner "missed feedback from earlier attempts," as a tutor noted, resulting in the same algebraic sign mistakes showing up again when working through quadratic factorisation.

In each case, small process gaps snowballed—turning manageable tasks into lingering hurdles.

Recent Achievements

One West Leederville tutor noticed a big shift with a Year 11 student who had struggled to connect graphs and equations—now, he's confidently drawing linear and piecewise graphs from their equations and can also work backwards, deriving equations from the graphs.

A Year 9 student who used to mix up mean, median, mode, and range is now able to find each one correctly in different data sets without hesitation.

Meanwhile, a younger student in Year 5 began asking for help when adding or subtracting negative numbers instead of guessing, especially after working through the ladder analogy together.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Subiaco Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like West Leederville Primary School.
