The most important thing that is necessary in learning is that we understand what we study. Though it seems difficult, giving each student the individual attention is what a tutor should strive to achieve. The different mindsets in the class should be brought together and set in a pathway where they get excited about learning something new every…

The most important things a tutor can do are build a student’s confidence, personalize learning to suit their style, and simplify complex concepts to make them understandable. Tutors should foster curiosity, provide a safe, judgment-free space, and empower students to think critically and solve problems independently for long-term success. My…

Understanding the best way to teach a particular student is the most important thing a tutor can do; to shape their teaching methods into something effective and efficient. Throughout my years in high school, I was the go to person if someone needed help with school work. This gave me a lot of experience in tutoring across all year levels…

The most important things a tutor can do are to provide clarity, encouragement, and structure. A tutor should simplify complex ideas, guide students through problems step by step, and foster a positive learning environment where questions are always welcome. Build genuine confidence alongside the content. A student can learn a method in one session, but if they leave still believing they're bad at maths, not much has changed. The most important thing is making them feel capable, that the subject is learnable for them specifically. Beyond that, I think a good tutor listens more than they talk, and…

One of the most important things a tutor can do is paying attention. By doing so, a tutor can clearly identify where they are struggling, and then provided catered guidance as a response to that. It can also pinpoint a student's specific learning style, allowing further tailoring of sessions to mimic that. Further, it generally just shows the…

I think the most important thing a tutor can do is help students become independent learners. That means not just giving them the answers, but helping them understand how to solve problems on their own. A tutor should also create a supportive environment where students feel comfortable asking questions and are encouraged to keep learning. I think…

The most important thing a tutor can do is to make learning fun and not tiring or boring. The subject taught or the way it's taught should always be exciting, even if the test marks are not that high yet. Once the student finds their interest in the subject, I'm sure they will climb back up and succeed in no time. My strengths as a tutor are: I…

I believe the most important thing a tutor can do is make sure the student clearly understands the topic, not just memorises it. It's about helping them build real confidence so that when they answer questions, whether in class or in exams, they're not second-guessing themselves. That means breaking things down in a way that actually makes sense…

I would say a tutors' ultimate goal would be to get in sync with the way the student is taught in their respective schools, colleges or universities. Additionally, it is extremely important to make friends with the students, as this is necessary for proper engagement. I am not afraid to do some research when it comes to getting a student to…

I believe, in today's world, the tutors role is changing quickly. With tons of free education material available online, a tutor must provide personal touch for students and improve their learning rate. A tutors job is to make his/her students grasp that knowledge without having to go through the grind of looking for good material. A tutor must…

A trait I consider to be very important as a tutor is being a good leader. They should be very responsible for their actions, meaning that they will ensure each tutoring session is effective for the student. They should also be assertive, trustworthy and mindful, which helps them offer guidance to other students. Lastly, they should keep an open…

Inside ClaytonTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 11 student Olivia focused on VCE Biology Unit 3 topics, including nucleic acids and DNA/RNA manipulation processes like transcription and translation, working through sample exam questions for deeper understanding.

Year 9 student Thomas practiced solving equations involving powers and multiple variables in algebra, alongside word problems to reinforce these skills.

For a younger learner in Year 6, lessons covered measurement conversions between centimeters and meters as well as tackling multi-step worded questions that combined addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division.

Recent Challenges

A Year 11 Biology student hesitated when differentiating between nucleic acids and amino acids, particularly during gene regulation discussions; as noted, "needs a little more support with the details of transcription."

In Year 9 Mathematics, persistent self-doubt was evident: despite understanding indices rules when prompted, she hesitated to apply them independently and made calculation errors.

For a Year 4 student, reluctance to speak up—"she stays quiet instead of telling me she doesn't know how to do the question or because she is afraid to get it wrong"—meant confusion lingered in multi-step word problems. In these moments, uncertainty led to missed opportunities for feedback and growth.

Recent Achievements

A tutor in Clayton recently noticed a big shift for one Year 10 student who now answers exam questions unaided—something she used to depend on heavily.

In another session, a high schooler confidently explained the differences between DNA and RNA and handled tricky protein structure questions that had stumped her before.

Meanwhile, a younger student who'd been hesitant about reading aloud started making more attempts during lessons, moving from barely trying to giving it a real go.

One session ended with the student independently working through all her assigned maths problems after just a couple of practice runs together, showing true independent problem-solving.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Clayton Branch Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like John Monash Science School.
