As a tutor, I believe that simply teaching is not sufficient. The most crucial aspect is to guide students through the process, ensuring that they comprehend the concept and can apply it. The role of a tutor is to not only assist students in their academic subjects but also to maintain a positive relationship with them. Building a healthy bond is…

I think the most important things a tutor can do are explain concepts clearly, create a supportive learning environment, and help the student become more independent over time. I think my strengths as a tutor are patience, clear communication, and the ability to adjust my teaching style to suit different students. I try to make difficult ideas…

The most important role of the tutor would be to support the student in all manner a way, be it motivating them through a tough or stressful period or providing the resources and experiences to guide them through high school. My high school experiences of going through the rigorous James Ruse high school maths program, which have taught me all the…

The most important thing as a tutor is to always encourage their students, regardless of the circumstances. At the end of the day, it's not academic performance that truly matters, but rather the student's interest towards the subject. As well as this, there are times in which the student may stress out due to academic pressure, and it is times…

I believe the most important thing a tutor can provide towards a student apart from knowledge is the heightened sense of ease during an exam; through frequent testing under standard exam conditions the student is able to adapt to the stressful exam situations as if it was second nature. Good examination techniques should also be passed onto the…

Finding out whether a student is a visual, auditory or kinesthetic learner is important. By discovering how the student learns best, I believe he will be able to reach his true potential. To do this, a tutor must be malleable in his teaching methods and communication. Furthermore, it is crucial that the tutor and student create a bond that reaches…

I can break things down easily so that its easier for the students to understand. I am proactive and i can make a topic as interesting as possible. A tutor should be supportive, patient and mostly he should help a student gaining confidence in himself. As a tutor, he should always seek a way to simplify any educational lesson so that students feel excited and motivated to learn more. I believe that I have gained an experience dealing with different students and different mental capacities…

Tutors should place them selves in the position of the student and understand their learning style. Tutor should be approchable and patient. I think it's a question of what a tutor can BE rather than do. I found in my experience that I always responded to teachers who were enthusiastic and portrayed a genuine care for the learning of the student. In a metaphorical sense, the tutor must think like a student in an empathetic way rather than merely be a one way stream of instruction. If a…

The most important thing about tutoring is to ensure the students learn strategies to learn new mathematical concepts, so they can succeed on their own. This is because if a tutor were to consistenly helep a student by giving answers, the tutor is not going to accompany the students into their exams, and so the students may feel lost without the…

The most important thing for a tutor to do is not to continuously teach a concept but to teach it once (if the student has not learnt properly from school) and solidify that knowledge. A tutor knows every thing about their students whether they are comfortable with his or her method of teaching? The most important thing that a tutor can do is to teach them like a friend so that students won’t hesitate in asking questions again and again. Every mind is different, every student different. I feel one of the, if not the most important thing a tutor can do for a student is establish a sense of belief. If a student doesn't believe in their own ability and lacks confidence, then it is much harder for them to learn and more importantly it isn't enjoyable and rewarding. If a student believes in their ability then they are very likely to…

Personally, the best thing a tutor can do for a student is change their perspective regarding their weak subjects, Mathematics in particular has always been a favorite of mine yet I have had students who used to start sweating whenever we pulled out the textbook. However, once they realized that Mathematics can actually be quite fun, their…

Inside Clemton ParkTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 4 student Emily practised adding and subtracting fractions with the same denominator and previewed long division, while also working on understanding maths in word problems through homework tasks.

In Year 8, Lucas focused on factorising quadratic equations and revising how to use the quadratic formula to solve them, including discussing what "roots" mean for parabolas.

Year 9 student Sarah worked on manipulating linear equations by making a variable the subject and used tables and graphs to explore relationships between variables.

Recent Challenges

A Year 9 student avoided writing working for long division, preferring mental methods; this led to mistakes he couldn't check or fix—"He needs more practice to ensure he follows the new method instead of depending on his older method."

In Year 11 trigonometry, a tendency to regurgitate formulas without showing process meant errors went unnoticed.

For a Year 3 student, skipping homework and resisting new ways of setting out sums blocked progress with fractions.

Another in Year 7 hesitated to ask questions during algebra revision, missing feedback that would have clarified misconceptions and built confidence.

Recent Achievements

One Clemton Park tutor noticed a big change in Willa, a high school student who used to get stuck on wordy maths problems—she now asks questions when unsure and recently solved several tricky ones on her own using new strategies.

Cooper, also in high school, shifted from waiting for hints to actively looking for solutions and tackling quadratic equations with much more independence than before.

Meanwhile, a Year 4 student who previously needed help reading longer passages managed to read an entire book out loud solo this week, only stumbling over a couple of words.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Bexley North Branch Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Clemton Park Public School.
