The most important thing a tutor can do for a student to lift them up what they feel mostly interested while learning anything. To motivate them while they do something new and bring any new idea to resolve any problem. That will help to develop the psychology of a student in more positive way to move forward with their willingness of thinking…

I think the most important thing a tutor can do is help students build confidence in their learning. Many students already have the ability to succeed but just need someone to guide them and explain things in a way that makes sense. A good tutor should be supportive, patient, and willing to adapt to the student’s learning style. It’s also…

The most important thing a tutor can do for a student is to light the curiousity spark in the child's minds for any topics, and with persistance mentorship guide children to develop critical thinking abilities in maths and various related disciplines. I have a passion for teaching and I am patience with it. I am also hard working and have got the…

Tutors should personalise their teaching for each of their students. This involves understanding how a student learns best in order to cater to their learning needs and habits. For example, I find that some students prefer particular types of examples over others, and this informs me about how I can best explain new concepts to them. I've tutored…

Setting high but achievable standards for students is essential as it pushes students to break self-imposed barriers. It enables them to discover themselves and gives them the much-needed confidence to excel in their academics or prospective career path. In my perspective, the most important role of a tutor is to foster a deep understanding of the subject matter while nurturing a positive attitude towards learning. Building a strong foundation and instilling confidence in students are vital. Beyond that, effective communication and the ability to create a supportive learning environment are…

Not only providing valuable insights into learning techniques and skillsets constructed from personal experience, but also giving students the necessary ingredients for building their own toolset with guidance and advice. I believe taking the time with each individual student and connecting with them on a personal level is the most important thing as each student is going through different experiences and difficulties. Tutors can support other educators to help students learn how to learn. 1-on-1 support can help shed light on the exact nature of any obstacles a student might experience, which might be missed in a group classroom setting. A tutor should be knowledgeable to be able to address all concerns of a student and check when unable to immediately answer a query. Additionally a tutor should be easy to talk to, allowing for untrained conversations between student and tutor. Finally, a tutor should be able to motivate their students, ridding them of the disbelief that they…

Try make tutoring fun, students no matter how hard you try will not retain information and be willing to learn if they are really against it. So by presenting the content in a fun but still effective manner, it is bound to show results. The most important thing when it comes to content is to not spoon feed them with the right answers, you need…

The first step is to listen to the problem of the student. Identify the best way to teach the student. Then slowly improve the confidence in the student to master the subject. In my opinion, one of the most important things a great tutor can do for a student is to increase their passion for the subject. When a student genuinely enjoys learning about a topic, they will be more motivated. When students love what they're learning, it unlocks their potential. Inside Clifton HillTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 10 student Amber revised the quadratic formula and how to use the discriminant to determine the nature of roots, then practiced applying these skills to worded problems.

For Year 11, Olivia focused on factorising cubic polynomials as well as reviewing errors from her recent test using worked examples.

Meanwhile, Year 12 student Ethan tackled logarithms and converting numbers to significant figures, with a focus on interpreting exam-style questions.

Recent Challenges

In Year 9 maths, one student often skipped showing working for algebra and graphing questions—"she tried to do it all in her head," a tutor observed, which led to hidden sign errors that took time to find.

A Year 11 student tended to rush through extended response problems, not checking answers or units, so minor mistakes crept into exam-style practice.

Meanwhile, a Year 6 student regularly doubted his answers and avoided attempting unfamiliar tasks unless shown an example first; this hesitancy slowed progress with fractions and statistics, leaving him uncertain about next steps when working alone.

Recent Achievements

One Clifton Hill tutor recently noticed a big shift in a Year 10 student who used to avoid asking for help—now, he actively requests clarification when stuck, even asking for instructions to be repeated until he's sure, instead of waiting passively.

In senior English, another high schooler brought a list of specific questions she'd struggled with and worked through each one independently, showing far more ownership over her learning than before.

Meanwhile, a younger student who was initially reluctant about long division ended up finishing challenging multiplication problems with 7s, 8s, and 9s quickly and accurately by the end of the session.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as North Fitzroy Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Clifton Hill Primary School.
