I think the most important thing a physics tutor can do for a student is to teach them how to study and learn properly, as it then gives them the ability to use that skill outside of tutoring sessions and greatly improve their grades as well as their academic confidence. Another thing I believe to be important is making the learning experience as…

Patience and humour during the tutorial. A true interest in their situation. Listen to their way of thinking, reflecting back both the helpful and harmful logic patterns. Make them feel capable, not overwhelmed but stretched enough to feel they are achieving - this builds confidence. Keep the subject fresh and exciting, go outside the…

I believe that the most important things a physics tutor can do for a student are to develop their problem solving skills in a way that when they encounter a new problem in the future they will be able to apply their skills and break the problem down to solve it. I also believe that a tutor should work to develop a student's confidence in their…

While the goals of every student are individual and varied, and any tutor should adjust their style accordingly, I believe there are a few things a physics tutor can do for any student. They can provide a space where a student feels safe and comfortable expressing themselves, inspire the student to feel confident in their skills and give the…

Varying teaching methods to provide students with a greater opportunity to learn is important. Every student has different strengths and weaknesses. Instead of just focusing on one method that only appeals to a single learning style, varying teaching techniques can cater your lessons to different learning styles. Students will be more successful…

To instil confidence in students and inspire them to study the subject. The tutor should make complicated concepts as simple as possible. Besides, the tutor should be very friendly. I have been teaching math for many years, and I have worked with students of varying skill levels. This approach helps them tackle any type of problem they may face and develop a deeper appreciation for the…

In my opinion that would be helping a student discover their own motivation and confidence. By showing them what they’re truly capable of and helping them build on that, we can foster a sense of ownership over their learning and long-term growth. I believe that I am a tutor that creates a safe, encouraging environment where students feel…

A good tutor plays a vital role in a student's learning journey by fostering both understanding and confidence. Beyond simply delivering content, an effective tutor identifies the student's strengths and weaknesses, adapts their teaching approach accordingly, and ensures that concepts are truly understood rather than memorized. The most important thing any sort of teacher or mentor can do for not just students, but anyone, is to make sure the students believe in themselves and their abilities, for that will take them beyond any test or assignment. I believe that the most important thing a tutor can do is they make the student no longer need a tutor. Where they can confidently take exams, plan out problems on their own. A tutor’s job is carving that path for them the proper way by encouraging them in a positive environment where the student wants to learn more. I like to teach in a casual…

Inside Clifton HillTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 10 student Amber revised the quadratic formula and how to use the discriminant to determine the nature of roots, then practiced applying these skills to worded problems.

For Year 11, Olivia focused on factorising cubic polynomials as well as reviewing errors from her recent test using worked examples.

Meanwhile, Year 12 student Ethan tackled logarithms and converting numbers to significant figures, with a focus on interpreting exam-style questions.

Recent Challenges

In Year 9 maths, one student often skipped showing working for algebra and graphing questions—"she tried to do it all in her head," a tutor observed, which led to hidden sign errors that took time to find.

A Year 11 student tended to rush through extended response problems, not checking answers or units, so minor mistakes crept into exam-style practice.

Meanwhile, a Year 6 student regularly doubted his answers and avoided attempting unfamiliar tasks unless shown an example first; this hesitancy slowed progress with fractions and statistics, leaving him uncertain about next steps when working alone.

Recent Achievements

One Clifton Hill tutor recently noticed a big shift in a Year 10 student who used to avoid asking for help—now, he actively requests clarification when stuck, even asking for instructions to be repeated until he's sure, instead of waiting passively.

In senior English, another high schooler brought a list of specific questions she'd struggled with and worked through each one independently, showing far more ownership over her learning than before.

Meanwhile, a younger student who was initially reluctant about long division ended up finishing challenging multiplication problems with 7s, 8s, and 9s quickly and accurately by the end of the session.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as North Fitzroy Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Clifton Hill Primary School.
