Respect and listen to their current understanding so that they do not get bored by over explanation or lost by under explanation. I am comfortable explaining new concepts in relatable ways. I believe the most important things a tutor can do for a student starts by being present and engaging in their learning. Students are more able to build their confidence when a tutor shows they're dedicated to helping them develop in all areas of their learning. A great tutor creates a safe space for students where they can ask questions without…

Engagement is key while tutoring and it's essential to impart information in a fun and interactive way so that students feel like learning as well. Tutors give students a chance to clear their doubts and stay ahead in the subjects that they are pursuing. I think that I am great at making students feel comfortable and motivated to study. I make…

The most important thing a tutor can do is ensure that a student does not hate the subject they require tutoring in. The tutor must approach the subject on the same level as the student so that the student does not dread having a tutoring session and develops a liking towards the subject. I ensure that someone works to their full potential and if…

I believe having a tutor who presents work in a manageable and stepwise manner is key. many students are embarrassed to admit when they don't understand concepts they may think are simple, or are intimidated by the seeming difficulty of some of the work. Presenting the problems as manageable and breaking them down helps the student gain your trust…

I believe that the most essential things a tutor can do for a student are to boost their confidence, promote a true grasp of the subject, and provide a secure, supportive environment in which they can ask questions and make errors. A skilled tutor does more than just deliver answers; they help pupils think critically and build problem-solving…

Every student has a different learning style; I can say this from experience as i was always until recently been labelled as not terribly gifted logically. This was until i found a tutor that was patient enough to guide me in my pursuit of knowledge, from a perspective that i understood. I believe that this is the most important action a tutor…

I don't believe studying should be a chore. I think the most important thing a tutor can do for a student is enable them to see the beauty and fun of any subject rather than letting them focus on the anxiety or stress that comes with its difficulty. If a tutor can allow a student to not only do well in their subject, but also enjoy it, that to…

One of the most important things I can do for a student is to understand their current level of knowledge and identify any gaps in their understanding. Every student learns at a different pace and may struggle with different aspects of a subject, so it is important to first determine where they are academically before planning how best to support…

There are two main things that a tutor should aim to provide for a student: 1. Confidence/Self esteem - Students can't learn if they feel bad about themselves or their ability to learn (learn maths specifically in this case) Any teacher of a student, needs to praise a students effort as being inherently valuable as well as praising any…

Taksheel has had his first lesson with Ben last week and it was quite helpful. Ben was well able to engage him and we felt continuing the lessons for an hour each week would be the best way forward for now.

Inside Clifton HillTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 10 student Amber revised the quadratic formula and how to use the discriminant to determine the nature of roots, then practiced applying these skills to worded problems.

For Year 11, Olivia focused on factorising cubic polynomials as well as reviewing errors from her recent test using worked examples.

Meanwhile, Year 12 student Ethan tackled logarithms and converting numbers to significant figures, with a focus on interpreting exam-style questions.

Recent Challenges

In Year 9 maths, one student often skipped showing working for algebra and graphing questions—"she tried to do it all in her head," a tutor observed, which led to hidden sign errors that took time to find.

A Year 11 student tended to rush through extended response problems, not checking answers or units, so minor mistakes crept into exam-style practice.

Meanwhile, a Year 6 student regularly doubted his answers and avoided attempting unfamiliar tasks unless shown an example first; this hesitancy slowed progress with fractions and statistics, leaving him uncertain about next steps when working alone.

Recent Achievements

One Clifton Hill tutor recently noticed a big shift in a Year 10 student who used to avoid asking for help—now, he actively requests clarification when stuck, even asking for instructions to be repeated until he's sure, instead of waiting passively.

In senior English, another high schooler brought a list of specific questions she'd struggled with and worked through each one independently, showing far more ownership over her learning than before.

Meanwhile, a younger student who was initially reluctant about long division ended up finishing challenging multiplication problems with 7s, 8s, and 9s quickly and accurately by the end of the session.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as North Fitzroy Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Clifton Hill Primary School.
