I believe that a tutor can be a great companion and listening ear for students, beyond ensuring a lateral transfer and teaching of information. Having traversed the same path, they can also be a mentor and guide students on a potentially confusing educational journey. A tutor's reassurance is therefore very important as it can create a more…

It is important to listen to the needs of learners and understand how they absorb information so the teaching structure can be adjusted accordingly. - The ability to explain information based on the listener's level of knowledge, interest, and comprehension. - The capability to repeat explanations several times without getting annoyed. - Complex…

1) Never make them feel that their doubt is small or way too easy. 2) Make sure they always ask questions and provide them with right answers. 3) Never give out the solution of any given problem at once but rather provide them small details, eventually helping them make their way out of the question on their own. By doing this, students tend to…

I think it goes without saying that a tutor should help their student/s to understand concepts so that the student can improve on their grades. But I believe that tutoring goes so much further beyond that. A tutor should strive to truly engage the student in their learning. A good tutor will motivate and inspire the student so that they are…

I think the bonding between the tutor and the student is very important. If the student doesn't feel comfortable talking to the tutor, he or she will never learn effectively. They need to be comfortable enough so that they can ask questions whenever they need to! I am a very easy person to talk to. I am not shy and am willing to speak up. As a…

Being understanding of the student's needs is the duty of the tutor and do your best to improve the student's understanding of school subjects. The tutor needs to be flexible for the student's needs and make adjusts to their timetable and their needs to adjust the homework, as well as the teaching styles so students learn the content. Which means…

I think the most important thing a tutor can do is create a space where the student feels supported and understood. Learning only happens when a student feels comfortable enough to say they’re confused, so building trust is essential. Another key responsibility is clarity breaking concepts down into simple, manageable steps and adapting…

The most important things a tutor can do for a student are to guide them towards the right answer without spoon-feeding them so they are able to effectively find the answer by themselves. A tutor helps the student understand the subject matter in detail and at ease. He/she breaks the complex problem which require analytical skills to simpler arithmetic problems a student can work on. This in turn builds confidence in the student who in turn can easily interpret exam-setting questions as well as real life logic with ease. I like to…

To be present, supportive and put faith in the student. As I believe most of the time, no matter what the tutor does, in the end, most students merely lack the confidence to push themselves forward in their studies and need people who believe in them, paired with the correct tools to lead them in the right direction. I have a deep understanding of…

A tutor has the opportunity to shape a students' mind, in more ways than one. To me, a tutor must be able to effectively communicate ideas to students in a manner that allows them to understand the concept. Understanding of more conceptually difficult topics is a difficulty every student faces and is ultimately the barrier against marks. Being able to really connect with a student and portray the idea at hand in a manner in…

Inside ClovellyTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 6 student Oliver focused on converting between decimals and fractions as well as simplifying mixed and improper fractions.

For Year 9, Ava worked through compound interest calculations and compared simple versus compound investments using value tables.

Meanwhile, Year 10 student Jack tackled factorisation methods in algebra along with more complex problems involving addition and subtraction of fractions by applying factorisation strategies.

Recent Challenges

A Year 9 student tackling trigonometry found multi-step sine and cosine rule questions challenging when working alone; the tutor noted, "he needed guidance to find relevant angles," revealing a struggle to persist through complex problems without support.

In Year 11 Maths, worded income tax and commission problems proved overwhelming—questions with dense text led to missed steps and confusion.

Meanwhile, a Year 6 student's written work remained difficult to follow due to unorganized note-taking in probability tasks: "notes were scattered across the page."

Not putting pen to paper during homework left gaps that made it tough for tutors to pinpoint sources of confusion.

Recent Achievements

A tutor in Clovelly noticed a Year 9 student who used to avoid asking for help now openly requests clarification when stuck, especially with factorisation questions—an important shift from silent guessing.

In Year 11, one student recently corrected their own homework errors after carefully reviewing feedback, showing genuine independence that wasn't there before.

Meanwhile, a Year 5 learner who had struggled with long division earlier in the year has begun explaining solution steps out loud while working through problems and now completes them confidently without guidance. Last session, they finished an entire worksheet alone.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Randwick Branch Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like St Anthony's Catholic Primary School.
