In general, I believe that the best way to teach Maths/Science is in a way which the student understands the concepts rather than just giving the student a method to produce an answer, which is how these subjects are commonly taught. 1. I am self-directed, energetic, and enthusiastic. I have completed my Bachelor of Engineering + Management…

I have been teaching math for many years, and I have worked with students of varying skill levels. I encourage all of my students to solve problems based on real-life examples, and I help them explain their solutions in their own words. This approach helps them tackle any type of problem they may face and develop a deeper appreciation for the…

I think the most important goal as a tutor is to create a positive environment for a student. Being patient, understanding and maintaining a positive attitude has a wide array of benefits, including learning. Second to this is the ability to help a student gain an instinctive understanding of the concept manner. More than just helping with…

Setting high but achievable standards for students is essential as it pushes students to break self-imposed barriers. It enables them to discover themselves and gives them the much-needed confidence to excel in their academics or prospective career path. The most important thing is allowing students to become independent. The tutor should show them how to solve problems so that they can do them themselves and not just solve problems for them. My strength is illustrating concepts and finding the right examples that explain the point best. I also have good communication skills that make the student…

The best thing any Tutor can do is make a student like a particular subject which she/he used to previously dislike. This means that the Tutor has made a boring subject interesting to the students. And in this way, the student will remember what he/she learns for a lifetime and not just for the purpose of examinations. I am a very patient Tutor,…

As a math and physics tutor, motivating students to do more practice questions is the best thing I can do for them. The more they understand concepts, the better they link them and apply them in difficult questions requiring analysis. My legacy for students is for them to feel inclined in doing more and more questions, it is from there a passion…

Giving confidence to the student is the most important thing. If the student is not confident in their ability to do the task, then they will believe that they can not and will not try. A tutor must be able to build a students confidence, and not a dependence. For instance, lets say in physics, rather than teaching a student to memorise formula or answer, a good tutor will ensure the student understands the subject and how to apply it. This mindset is extremely crucial to building student confidence, and it stays in memory much…

The most important thing a tutor - or any teacher - can do is spark a genuine desire to learn, rather than making learning feel like a requirement. I have a positive attitude even when the student is wrong, I correct them by not saying that they were wrong but by picking up the same topic and explaining it in the correct manner. Local Reviews

It is only one week since we commenced Grade 6 maths tutoring but so far I have been extremely happy with the overall service, communication levels, speed of commencement and we now have a lovely tutor that I think my daughter will enjoy working with on a weekly basis.
Shelley Barrett, Coburg

Inside Coburg NorthTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 4 student Sarah focused on phonics and common spelling words, practicing through reading exercises.

For Year 11, Michael worked on applying Newton's laws to cars with trailers involving friction, as well as inclined plane calculations using F=ma.

Meanwhile, Year 12 student Alex explored electromagnetic fields—covering ratios, dot and cross products—and extended this into Lenz's and Faraday's laws by analyzing flux changes using diagrams.

Recent Challenges

In Year 12 Physics, Erin's exam and SAC performance has often been affected by time management and confidence when translating worded problems into equations—one session noted, "she wasn't fully able to answer a 3-mark written response about Air resistance…and seemed a little rattled."

Calculator entry errors have also recurred, with correct formulas but inaccurate final answers.

Earlier in the year, she occasionally arrived without worked homework questions due to organization lapses.

In contrast, a Year 4 student's work revealed frequent issues with handwriting clarity and layout when tackling Venn diagrams or reading comprehension tasks, making their reasoning difficult to follow during review.

Recent Achievements

A tutor in Coburg North noticed a high school student who, after previously losing marks to small errors and timing issues on her SACs, now confidently explains her maths reasoning out loud and has started critiquing and defending her solutions—something she used to avoid.

Another older student recently took the lead in sessions by setting the agenda herself, bringing up integrals and wave problems she wanted help with, showing a new level of independence compared to waiting for guidance.

Meanwhile, a younger primary student who once rushed through reading is now pausing to sound out words before moving on.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Preston Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Mercy College.
