Treat each student as an individual person. The same methods of tutoring might not apply on the other. Moreover patience is necessary. Tutors should maintain a pace comfortable for the student. Tutors should be humble enough to admit if they don't know few answers and should be able to research and provide the answers to the student. I learn…

For a student, the most essential thing a tutor can do is imparting complete knowledge as half knowledge is dangerous. So, when a child is fully aware of something, he can be confident enough to explore more beyond his imagination. A tutor must be resilient enough to teach students in the best way. The strength of a tutor lies in his knowledge and…

In school, they teach students based on a certain method that suits a cohort or class of students, which caused some students to lag behind. I find that as a tutor, we need to identify which part is lagging behind, then tackle it together with the student. I am friendly so I could easily build a rapport with my students. I come in understanding…

Leave them with a proper process with answering questions under time pressure. Make learning if not enjoyable at least tolerable, as learning new things is much harder if you don’t have any interest in it. Make your teaching digestible for the student depending on their level of understanding - not too easy not too hard. Breaking down complex…

Believing in students is one of the crucial aspects for being a tutor. The student needs someone to believe in them to succeed in their subjects, even if they themselves do not do so. Patience and firmness go hand in hand, so that the tutor is able to ensure the students cultivates discipline when learning, but also that they enjoy the process. As…

Local Reviews

It is only one week since we commenced Grade 6 maths tutoring but so far I have been extremely happy with the overall service, communication levels, speed of commencement and we now have a lovely tutor that I think my daughter will enjoy working with on a weekly basis.
Shelley Barrett, Coburg

Inside Coburg NorthTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 4 student Sarah focused on phonics and common spelling words, practicing through reading exercises.

For Year 11, Michael worked on applying Newton's laws to cars with trailers involving friction, as well as inclined plane calculations using F=ma.

Meanwhile, Year 12 student Alex explored electromagnetic fields—covering ratios, dot and cross products—and extended this into Lenz's and Faraday's laws by analyzing flux changes using diagrams.

Recent Challenges

In Year 12 Physics, Erin's exam and SAC performance has often been affected by time management and confidence when translating worded problems into equations—one session noted, "she wasn't fully able to answer a 3-mark written response about Air resistance…and seemed a little rattled."

Calculator entry errors have also recurred, with correct formulas but inaccurate final answers.

Earlier in the year, she occasionally arrived without worked homework questions due to organization lapses.

In contrast, a Year 4 student's work revealed frequent issues with handwriting clarity and layout when tackling Venn diagrams or reading comprehension tasks, making their reasoning difficult to follow during review.

Recent Achievements

A tutor in Coburg North noticed a high school student who, after previously losing marks to small errors and timing issues on her SACs, now confidently explains her maths reasoning out loud and has started critiquing and defending her solutions—something she used to avoid.

Another older student recently took the lead in sessions by setting the agenda herself, bringing up integrals and wave problems she wanted help with, showing a new level of independence compared to waiting for guidance.

Meanwhile, a younger primary student who once rushed through reading is now pausing to sound out words before moving on.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Preston Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Mercy College.
