I strongly believe in the idea behind the saying, teach a person how to fish, and you feed them for a lifetime. A tutor's role extends beyond just providing answers; it's about equipping students with problem-solving skills that they can apply across different subjects and real-world situations. My engineering degree has taught me how to break…

Besides helping them understand and learn a topic, the tutor should also help the student master the topic through mastery learning. Mastery learning is a way of designing units of work so that each set of tasks focuses on a particular learning objective and students must master a task to move onto the next one. The tutor should also help the…

Be an example. Be relaxed, and make the student enjoy the subject without feeling like education is be all end all. Knowledge and grades are only a means to an end, a tutor should make sure the students understand that. I can relate and communicate with students. In my opinion, a tutor must be able to empathize with the student and create a safe space for them. Its important to be constructive and patient especially with the ones that take time to grasp topics. One must keep instructions clear and always strive to empower the child by focusing on their strengths. Engage them instead of lecturing…

According to me the most important trait in a tutor is patience. It is not necessary that each child learns at the same pace. A tutor should also possess the ability to create and provide problem statements which help the student to get a grip over the topic. Along with a good speaker a tutor must be a good listener making the session more…

Giving them encouragement and prompting them to keep trying. Emphasizing repetition is very important. It builds a 'keep trying' attitude in the students that will carry them through school and further on in their lives. I am patient with students. One of the most important things a tutor can do for a student is to keep them motivated. I think a tutor can teach a student how to learn a topic after it is explained by the tutor. Because at the end, it is the student who needs to learn by themselves after something is being taught to them. A tutor should make sure that anyone can learn those topics on their own if they are introduced by the tutor. My first strength as a tutor is my…

In my opinion, the most important responsibility of a tutor is not to teach specific knowledge or skills but to incite the confidence and curiosity for knowledge in students. Ultimately, a successful tutor is the one who can help students out of their bottlenecks, assists them in studying, and finally equips them with the skills and mindsets for…

The most important things a tutor can do for a student go beyond simply reviewing homework. A tutor must make sure the student truly understands the 'why' behind the concepts, especially in subjects like Math, Chemistry, and Biology. Rote memorization is temporary; genuine understanding, which comes from breaking down complex ideas, is permanent.…

Inside CollinswoodTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 5 student Alex focused on division strategies and practiced 8 and 9 times tables during homework sessions, also touching briefly on triangles using visual examples.

For Year 8, Sarah explored the chapter on ratios, working through practical ratio problems and then moved into probability concepts with grid-based questions.

Meanwhile, Year 11 student Jason tackled trigonometry—reviewing bearings and angle calculations—and delved into tree diagrams to understand their role in probability problems.

Recent Challenges

In Year 4, a student lost focus during times tables revision—"gets very disinterested with times tables"—making it hard to build fluency beyond the basics.

In Year 8, notes reveal an over-reliance on memory for multiplication rather than setting out workings; as one tutor observed, "relies too heavily on memory at times…instead of being proficient at multiplication."

A Year 10 learner's algebra work showed missing steps and poor page layout, which led to errors being hidden rather than corrected.

Meanwhile, in Year 11 Maths Methods, organization issues meant past problems weren't reviewed before sessions, leaving gaps unaddressed.

Recent Achievements

One Collinswood tutor noticed a Year 9 student who had struggled to connect multiplication and division now starting to explain problems as "groups of" and independently spotting the link between the two operations.

In a senior session, a Year 11 student who was hesitant with surds began expanding brackets on her own after they worked through exercises together, showing more initiative with each step.

Meanwhile, a primary student who usually relied on times tables charts decided to attempt division questions without them and got most answers right, even asking for extra practice when finished.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Walkerville Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like St Monica's Parish School.
