I believe a tutor should always be reliable, punctual, patient, kind, and supportive - as this creates a safe learning environment for all students. I am newly graduated, meaning I still recall all the emotions and stresses of high school, and know the content and structure of various subjects extremely well. I excelled at my own school in English…

I think the most important stuff a tutor can do is boost confidence to students. You have to make students believe they can tackle anything. It's also about giving tips on studying and problem-solving that fit them perfectly. Making learning fun and showing why it matters in real life—gets them to learn more. I think my strengths as a tutor are…

Breaking down complex concepts into small builidng blocks, such that the student can construct these ideas together, and reach an understanding of the concept. Over the years, I have developed the opinion that the teaching of transferable skills - contrary to only what is needed at the moment - is most valuable for the student’s future development. It is important to see that just completing the mandatory homework will not suffice, the real challenge is to change the mindset. As a good tutor, one has…

The most important thing a tutor can do is be encouraging and have faith in the student. Learn with the student. I am striving to be a better person each day, with it, comes humility. I believe that if you come to the student appearing human and able to make mistakes (as I am not a robot), the student will understand that I am not intimidating nor a machine, but rather human just like they are. Building a strong and humane connection…

Encourage them to pursue their dreams. Teach them to be lifelong learners. I believe you have completely understood the concept when you can simplify it entirely. Inside CoogeeTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 4 student Robbie focused on multiplying and dividing fractions, then compared different fraction values using visual aids.

In Year 10, Claire worked through compound and simple interest calculations as well as interpreting compounded value tables for financial maths topics.

Meanwhile, Year 11 student Alex explored the declining-balance method of depreciation and reducing-balance loans, with practical examples to deepen understanding of financial mathematics concepts.

Recent Challenges

A Year 10 student's test performance revealed persistent timing issues—"still struggling to complete tests in the correct time frame"—with rushed endings leading to unfinished questions in algebra.

For Year 11 Physics, forgotten content after missed sessions resulted in gaps that "couldn't be covered quickly before the test," causing anxiety and confusion.

In Year 6 Maths, unorganized note-taking meant key formulas were missing when revising fractions.

Another senior student hesitated to write working out for worded problems: "He holds back in case he gets an answer wrong," so mistakes remained hidden and feedback couldn't be used effectively.

Recent Achievements

One Coogee tutor recently saw a Year 9 student, previously hesitant to ask for help, now actively seeking clarification whenever confused—a big change from just nodding along in earlier sessions.

A Year 11 student has started fixing mistakes independently after only one correction, where before he would repeat the same error several times.

Meanwhile, a Year 4 learner who used to stumble over times tables is now recalling them more smoothly each week and even completed a new set without prompts during their last session.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Randwick Branch Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like St Brigid's Catholic Primary School.
