A tutor should provide what a teacher can't. There is a reason that students seek tutoring, and it is therefore a tutor's role to meet their needs. I believe patience is the most important thing. Not everyone thinks the same, and its important for a tutor to understand this, and to move at a pace that suits the student, whilst also challenging…

First and foremost, a tutor has to gel up with the student, make him/her comfortable. Once that is done, the teaching method adopted must be interesting, with must include examples from daily life so that the student can relate to it easily. Moreover, a diagrammatic approach must be used while teaching, since, children tend to remember pictures…

Help the student understand the topics they are learning and be applied to the task at hand and even future tasks. I believe I have a good understanding of individuals struggles when it comes to school work as I’ve been there myself. However with a bit of hard work and viewing ideas from a new perspective anything is…

I believe the most important thing a tutor can do for a student is to understand their cognitive load. Focusing on how much the student can process during a given session, allows an effective learning plan to be created. In turn, the student will be able to establish deeper understandings and be able to reach their full potential. My strengths are…

Help students to help themselves by scaffolding their learning and building their confidence. Teaching students to approach a topic in a way that they can break it down into its constituent parts, developing a plan to address each task, and successfully completing it, step by step. I have had good feedback from students saying that I am…

I think the most important is to follow the students lead. They will often know their weaknesses and from spending time working with them, you can take note of possible areas of improvement. However, at the end of the day you are there to help the student so by listening and communicating effectively both parties will be satisfied. The ability to…

Help them gain confidence in their own intellectual capabilites across the board, not just in a specific subject. One of my major strengths is patience. I think as a tutor it is very important to understand the student and their situation and to make sure they are comfortable and ready to learn. A lot of patience is required as students have their…

To be an effective tutor, it is essential to focus on three critical aspects. Firstly, a tutor should be able to create a personalized learning experience that caters to the unique needs and learning style of each student. Secondly, building a strong rapport with the student is essential in fostering a positive and supportive learning environment,…

There are definitely many important things that a tutor can do for a student but in my opinion, the most important would have to be correcting the mistakes and wrongs. I believe providing an environment in which the student is confident and motivated about what they are learning will help them achieve goals. A tutor can build a child's confidence, boost them to achieve higher. Help them to ask questions because they will learn from that. Furthermore if it is hard for a student to understand something, a tutor should try a different approach so that the student understands better. The tutor should come up with new learning strategies. As a tutor the…

Help the student figure out their own study methods, as tutoring can only get you so far within an hour of time. The real magic is when the student can apply techniques outside of supervised study. Zoe, Coogee

Inside CoogeeTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 4 student Chinnu worked on mastering times tables and explored the relationship between fractions, decimals, and percentages by graphing results.

For Year 10, Daniel reviewed parabolas and quadratic equations, focusing on both problem-solving strategies and pre-test revision.

Meanwhile, Year 11 student Sarah tackled matrices and vectors from her recent assessments, along with a targeted review of key topics that appeared in her test materials.

Recent Challenges

In Year 11 mathematics, one student tended to do most calculations mentally, which led to missed steps and inconsistent results—"he needs a method that suits him but shows working," as a tutor observed.

In English (Year 7), another found it difficult to organize ideas on paper, resulting in long, confusing stories; focus drifted especially when writing dialogue or solving worded math problems.

Meanwhile, a Year 10 student hesitated to communicate confusion in class and rarely asked for help, making persistent gaps harder to address before assessments. The silence lingered even after lessons ended.

Recent Achievements

One Coogee tutor noticed a big shift with a Year 10 student who previously hesitated to ask for help; now, she's openly requesting clarification on tricky questions and working through problems independently.

Another high schooler, Harrison, moved from struggling to identify key features of parabolas in week one to confidently pinpointing them by week two—showing clear progress in understanding quadratics.

In primary sessions, Bander surprised his tutor by applying new creative writing techniques at home between lessons, showing initiative and ownership over his learning that wasn't there before.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Spearwood Public Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Coogee Primary School.
