I think the most important thing that a tutor can do is to be non-judgemental and to genuinely believe that each and every student will succeed. Although some children might be slower to grasp certain concepts, at the end of the day the most important thing is to encourage them every step of the way. I graduated high school with an ATAR of 94.3,…

A tutor needs to be a strong support for the student. Providing a comfortable environment where the student can discuss and barriers to learning that may be affecting them without the fear of judgement or doubt will enhance the learning experience by many fold. Tutors must be flexible and adjustable to adapt to the student's learning style and…

Building the student's confidence and knowledge are the two key aspects of being a tutor that I have found during my experience. Nothing is more important than a student feeling they can combat the work which is put in front of them. I can be flexible and work with the strengths and weaknesses of my students. I am extremely organised which allows…

A tutor should be able to promote a growth mindset, where the student can learn from their own mistakes. It is important to assess the student and understand strengths and weaknesses before starting a lesson, and it is also crucial to assess the student after a lesson to measure the progress. A good tutor will be able to build confidence in the…

A tutor is not responsible for not passing the exam only, rather he needs to guide the student toward a better future for the student & a wellbeing for the society. I believe that "The teacher is the backbone of the nation". I can understand whether the student really understood or not. "Quality study" is more important than "Quantity study",…

A tutor can inspire and instill self belief/self esteem back into a student. A tutor can motivate students to study hard and receive good marks. When students receive good marks the student gains self esteem and confidence and ultimately happiness (which akes tutoring very rewarding). A tutor can be a good role model and show students not only the…

Tutors should personalise their teaching for each of their students. This involves understanding how a student learns best in order to cater to their learning needs and habits. For example, I find that some students prefer particular types of examples over others, and this informs me about how I can best explain new concepts to them. I've tutored…

One of the most important things a tutor can do is just be patient with them. As students are brought up in a competitive environment in school, most times they feel inferior to their peers as not everyone learns at the same pace. Some learn faster and some learn slower and most often students feel lost and pressured. As a tutor, being there for…

Inside CoolarooTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 7 student Emily worked on calculating the **perimeter and area of various shapes**, including squares, rectangles, triangles, and parallelograms, as well as finding the volume of cubes and rectangular prisms.

In Year 8, Sam tackled **composite shape problems** by breaking down complex figures to find their perimeter and area using addition and subtraction of sections.

Meanwhile, Year 9 student Zoe focused on algebraic skills—defining coefficients, terms, expressions, equations—and practiced **rewriting algebraic expressions without multiplication signs** while determining rules from x and y value tables.

Recent Challenges

A Year 9 student often omitted steps when solving algebraic equations, making it difficult to spot errors; as one tutor observed, "he skipped showing steps in algebra, which hid sign errors."

In Year 11, a student's solutions for probability questions were hard to follow due to messy formatting and inconsistent use of terminology—this led to confusion during revision.

Meanwhile, a Year 4 learner frequently left homework incomplete and struggled with dividing two-digit numbers independently, sometimes losing focus partway through tasks. The missed practice meant skills weren't consolidating between lessons.

Recent Achievements

A tutor in Coolaroo noticed Oscar's shift to independence from relying on reassurance to independently checking his own maths solutions—by the end of one session, he was confidently using the backchecking method and asked for help far less often than before.

In Year 11, Sedra started choosing formulas unaided; she now automatically writes out her working when stuck and explains her thought process after prompting.

Meanwhile, Zoyi in Year 4 managed to complete two major activities within 30 minutes each—a first for her—and scored 12 out of 15 on an addition topic test.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Hume Libraries—or at your child's school (with permission), like St Mary's Coptic Orthodox College.
