I believe that each student has an individual learning style, and a tutor's role is to understand their students and tailor tutoring sessions around this idea to help their comprehension of a particular topic and make learning a more exciting…

The most important things a tutor can do for a student are to build their confidence, develop their problem-solving skills, and foster a genuine understanding of the subject. While improving grades is often a key goal, I believe true learning happens when a student feels empowered to think critically and tackle challenges independently. One of my…

I think the most important things a tutor can do for a student is to be honest about the amount of time and effort it will take to improve and to be able to meet the student where he or she is. I always make sure to understand how the student is processing the information before moving on. The most important thing is that we move at the student's…

Improving a student's results is obviously the goal for tutoring, but improving a student's confidence in themselves and their abilities is just as important. Watching a student start to believe in themselves and take the reins is a marker of success. I work well with kids and teens, as I am enthusiastic and make an effort to get to know them and…

Help them overcome challenges, sometimes if something makes no sense it needs to be explained in a different way. A tutor can understand the personal needs of the child as well as understanding the material and use this to approach learning in a way which will be most helpful for the student. I also study psychology so in that we do learn about…

It's important for the tutor to believe in the students capabilities. When a student has somebody there to be encouraging and reassuring, they are able to be in a better mind set for learning which can accelerate the time it takes to improve academic success. I consider myself to be extremely patient which is especially valuable with younger…

The most important thing a tutor should do is instil confidence in their students. For a student to gain confidence in their academic ability, a sound understanding of fundamental concepts, and ability to problem solve is crucial. Therefore, I have a strong emphasis on developing problem solving strategies and these core concepts relevant for each…

I believe the two most important things a tutor can do for a student are to aid them in the learning gaps they may have and to help them in building a positive relationship with academics. It is common that if students may have a negative relationship with subjects they are not very confident in. Building confidence in these subjects is one of the…

Structure what needs to be taught in a way that is personalised to the strengths of the student. There isn't a one size fits all way of teaching, so i believe the most important things that a tutor can do for a student is learn their strengths and how they learn best, and then adjust the topic in a way that helps them learn in an easier way. Listening to their needs and their struggles is vital to finding a way for them to enjoy school and the subject. You need to be able to push the student but in a way that helps them to achieve something they're proud of. Pushing them for results is usually only going to increase their frustration and dislike for school/learning. Tutors are in a…

A tutor, first and foremost, must ensure that a student is improving their grades, that is why people look for tutors in the first place. However, as well as this, a really good tutor can instil a genuine love of a given subject. This will also greatly assist in improving the student's performance. Thus the most important thing a tutor can do is…

Tutors are useful in the way that if a student didn’t understand how something was explained in class, we can offer different and more in depth explanations to help them achieve this understanding. Ensuring a student feels comfortable enough to ask questions is the most important thing a tutor can do in my opinion. That I am supportive, positive…

We are very impressed by Rish already. Her communication and thoroughness with the first session has been terrific. My son was beaming afterwards from the renewed sense of confidence Rish helped him discover. We're looking forward to the positive outcomes her tutoring will eventuate in.

Inside CoombsTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 8 student Sami focused on factorising by grouping and calculating the volume of prisms and cylinders, practicing with step-by-step examples.

In Year 10, Maddy worked through solving linear equations and reviewed applications of trigonometric ratios using diagrams to reinforce understanding.

For Year 11 Specialist Maths, Alex explored vectors—covering vector addition, scalar multiplication, and components—as well as permutations and combinations through practical problem sets.

Recent Challenges

In Year 8, a student relied on their calculator for basic operations—"requires calculator for simple multiplying (x 3 etc.), and squared numbers"—which slowed problem-solving during more complex test questions.

For a Year 11 Modern History task, late work was flagged: the report draft and bibliography were not submitted before the deadline, leading to last-minute stress.

Another senior student struggled with organization in English, often forgetting to bring required materials or copies of recent tests to sessions.

When composing an oral presentation in Year 10, perfectionism delayed drafting, as "notes weren't transformed into a speech" until just before practice was due.

Recent Achievements

A tutor in Coombs noticed Sami, a high school student, took the initiative to create his own maths questions after struggling with parabolas, which helped him improve from a C to a 71% on his recent exam—well above his target.

Rory, also in high school, showed real perseverance by writing continuously for almost an hour during an English session and later received positive feedback from his teacher for thoroughly covering assessment requirements.

In Year 6, Bea went from hesitating over difficult maths problems to finishing three complex exercises independently and proudly shared, "I'm proud of myself."

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Woden Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Charles Weston School.
