Listen to what they need, and what they are struggling with. Be patient if they don't understand something at first, and if they are still struggling with the concept after a while, trying teaching it to them in a different way so that they do understand. Have a full understanding of what you're tutoring before you try and explain it. I'm a very…

The most important thing a tutor can do for a student is to be easily available to them. Often times a student may wish to clarify a quick concept or question outside of tutor times for homework or other purposes. By being easily available to the student, a tutor can spare a few minutes of their day to support and promote the student's learning.…

I consider active listening and clear communication to be one of the most important things a tutor can do for a student. Without these two skills, any amount of tutoring will be ineffective. I think my strengths as a tutor are that I am very passionate about helping people and find it so rewarding. I also thrive working with others and solving…

The most important thing a tutor can do for their student is be able to get them back in the right direction when they are lost. To give the student the tools and knowledge to be able to further their own learning. My strengths as a tutor in particular are my versatility. To be able to enable to student to think, and answer hard questions when all else has failed. A tutor shouldn't teach a student but rather guide them to asking the right questions and figuring out the right paths to take in order to get the information that they need. I have only recently finished school, this allows me insight to a more updated…

To recognise the student's limits, and to help them reach beyond them. A tutor should set realistic goals for students to help them stay motivated and to make progress in their learning, however, they should also encourage students to achieve higher through effective communication and tutoring support. The most important thing a tutor can do for the student is to listen to their confusion, break down the problem and then explain and educate them methodically and appropriately to their style of learning. A tutor is not there to do the work for the student, it is a team effort wherein the tutor imparts understanding to the student so they can…

I feel it is important to recognise what the student is looking to get out of the tutoring experience. Although I have mentioned a lot about developing students' interests in the subjects, it is also important to realise that many students won't go on to develop careers in either fields and may simply be looking at improving their grades to open…

First and foremost I think that is having patience. People do not all learn in the same way and as I mentioned before, when teaching somebody, half the job is just figuring out the best way to frame it, something which requires patience and perseverance. What is also important as a tutor is not just telling students what they need to know, but…

One of the most important effects a tutor can have on a student is bringing out their confidence and have their student feel supported. Throughout my experience as a tutor, many students have said "I'm stupid" and this falsehood is holding them back. They lack confidence in exams and don't exercise sufficient effort for assignments, because they…

The most important thing a tutor can do is to inspire passion; a person who is sincerely interested in a subject and has a drive to continue delving into it will naturally go much further and achieve much higher then an unmotivated genius no matter the intellect as they will enjoy the entire journey of learning and not just focus on the results. I believe that a tutor plays an incredible different role to the classroom teacher. Being a role that has one-on-one interaction with a student, a tutor's most important thing is to focus their practice and method to the individual characteristics of the student. An example of this could be having activities with high intensity and movement for…

I think a tutor can give a student confidence, that a student doesn't need to be intimidated by a STEM class. The general attitude that these subject are 'too hard' or that a student 'will never use these skills again' sets up bright students for failure before they even set foot in a classroom. The most important thing a tutor can do is boost a…

Inside CorindaTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 5 student Tahlia worked through simple multiplication facts such as 7x8 and built up to multiplying larger numbers, explaining her reasoning at each step.

Year 6 Oscar focused on calculating percentages of whole numbers and practiced distinguishing when to add or subtract after finding a percentage in worded problems.

Meanwhile, Year 7 Jakob reviewed key essay structure elements by editing his Great Gatsby essay, focusing on clear thesis development and supporting arguments.

Recent Challenges

A Year 8 student often arrived late or forgot essential materials, which meant valuable lesson time was spent tracking down homework instead of reviewing algebra skills.

For a Year 11 student, unfinished assignments were a recurring issue—one week the excuse was that homework was left at a parent's house, leading to missed opportunities for targeted feedback.

In Year 9 English, "he kept nodding but rarely explained his thinking," making it hard to gauge understanding and slowing progress on essay planning.

Messy or incomplete written work in senior maths also made error-spotting difficult during revision sessions.

Recent Achievements

One Corinda tutor noticed that a Year 9 student, Ethan, made a real shift by completing his homework ahead of time and arriving to the session ready to discuss it—previously, he'd often left tasks unfinished or needed prompting.

In Year 10 English, Jakob showed new independence during essay work; rather than just listening passively, he took constructive criticism on board and started suggesting his own improvements for the next draft.

Meanwhile, Isabelle in Year 4 was able to confidently teach back her strategies for maths—something she'd struggled to remember just weeks earlier.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Corinda Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like St Joseph's Primary School.
