I believe it depends highly on the students understanding and their level of education. However in saying this, the ability to create interest and enjoyment in a subject is the most important. As from my own experience enjoying a subject and being interested in the topic helps greatly in motivating a person to understand and achieve well in it. I…

I think a tutor should not only serve as a teacher of sorts, but also a mentor. It's important that a student can look up to their tutor to give them the drive and confidence to continue learning since they have a role model who supported them in their learning and accomplishments. Tutors should also give students the tools needed to not only…

The most important part of tutoring in my opinion is being able to adapt to different students requirements, and noticing what each student needs most from you. Some students need someone to slowly work through problems and teach them the process, while others need someone to help enforce good habits and routines rather than purely just teaching,…

To help students understand the basic concepts in whatever they have to study and help them develop a deeper, more relatable understanding. It is also important for me as a tutor to serve as a good role model for students. I try to make concepts easier for students to understand. The most important thing a tutor can do for a student is to not spoon-feed the student. School is about learning to tackle challenges and problems, not necessarily about just passing or just scoring good grades. As a tutor, you are there to ensure you equip the student with the right tools and show them how to use those tools. I believe my…

Students spend a major part of a day in school. Many children are unable to get the most of it due to time-constraints and lack of individual attention in a class. However, there are a few students who maintain attention and focus in a classroom environment. Reason is they are more prepared than the rest. If a child follows what is happening in…

In my eyes, one of the most important aspects of a tutor would be the ability to see things through the student's perspective. Being able to pinpoint exactly what the student needs help with can make the entire learning experience more efficient and a lot more rewarding overall. It also makes the student feel a lot more comfortable, as a learning…

I believe the most important thing a tutor can do is give the student a complete and well-rounded understanding of the topic or question. At the fundamental level a tutor's role is to make sure that a student understands the material. Therefore, the most important things a tutor can do for a student is to go over mistakes made in previous tests/assessments and ensure the student has a good understanding of the previously covered topics and principles before moving on. Additionally,…

Christine Fonceca, Craigie

Inside CraigieTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 6 student Jasmine worked on rounding to the nearest tens and hundreds as well as reviewing place value concepts.

Year 7 student Ella practiced simplifying fractions and then moved on to basic algebra, focusing on using variables in equations.

For Year 8, Liam completed data analysis tasks, including interpreting graphs and calculating mean, median, and mode using real test results.

Recent Challenges

A Year 8 student's notes showed that messy written work and inconsistent layout made it difficult to track their thinking, especially in division problems—"his working out was hard to follow," a tutor observed, which led to confusion when reviewing errors.

Meanwhile, a Year 11 student tackling trigonometry occasionally skipped writing steps due to worry about making mistakes on the page; this perfectionism meant fewer chances to catch misunderstandings early.

In a Year 4 scenario, forgetting to attempt homework questions before tuition meant time was lost re-explaining familiar material instead of moving ahead with new skills.

Recent Achievements

A tutor in Craigie noticed one high school student who previously hesitated to show her working now confidently explains equations out loud and uses diagrams independently, a big shift from waiting for help.

Another secondary student, who struggled with applying BIMDAS rules, has started using factor trees on his own and can now handle mixed-operation problems without reminders.

In a primary session, Alegra—who used to rely heavily on drawing pictures—has begun answering addition questions faster by counting on her fingers instead. Last week, she finished all ten problems without needing to stop and draw once.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Whitford Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Whitford Catholic Primary School.
