I believe the most important things a biology tutor can do for a student is to challenge yet support them in their studies. By challenging the student to do better, yet simultaneously reminding them that it is okay to fail, the student will feel inspired enough to try. Furthermore, it is extremely important to build a personal relationship with…

I believe the most important aspect of being a biology tutor, is being a collaborator. Rather than giving the student the answers, it should be treated as a partnership in which you guide them on how to learn themselves and act as a dependable figure to show they're not alone in their experiences. I think my strengths are patience, creativity and…

A tutor should not just teach, but they should listen to their students, seek feedback and use that to improve their teaching. It is important to develop trust with students so that they feel comfortable asking questions, expressing their concerns and identifying topics that they may want to strengthen. In doing so, the tutor can gain a greater…

Having both been the tutee and the tutor, I believe that it is imperative that a biology tutor is supportive of the student and caters their teaching to the student's specific needs. Tutoring is only truly effective when the student is completely engaged with the tutor and I believe that this can only happen when the student believes that they are…

I think the most important thing a biology tutor can do for a student is to support them without judgement. Whether that support comes in smaller forms of teaching students concepts they may struggle with or encouraging students to not give up. As a biology tutor, it is important that you pass on the right knowledge to the student. Make them think about things by themselves instead of giving them straight away. A tutor, shouldn't discourage students if they ask a dumb question, they should resolve all their queries with a good understanding. A tutor's job is to support a student and be…

I think that the most important things that a biology tutor can do for a student would be to inspire them to love the subjects that they take and study, to be able to inspire them to do their work and really work at it in their own time, such that the tutoring isn't a dependency but a supplement to their success. Once that's achieved, it becomes…

Apart from the obvious requirements to provide sound academic knowledge and advice, the other aspect of tutoring that I consider most important is getting the student excited about learning. Inside Curl CurlTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 4 student Seth worked through **fractions** and practiced applying area formulas for rectangles, parallelograms, and triangles using diagrams.

For Year 9, Zane tackled finding **gradients and equations of straight lines** in coordinate geometry, then moved on to sequences and series with a focus on real-world examples.

Meanwhile, Year 10 student covered **financial maths by applying sequences and series to solve practical interest rate problems**, alongside revision of statistics concepts like mean and median.

Recent Challenges

In Year 9 algebra, a student "skipped showing steps in balancing variables," which made it hard to pinpoint where confusion crept in.

During Year 11 coordinate geometry, avoiding working out new types of equations led to errors when only points were given—one note reads, "he rushed and missed key parts."

A Year 7 student tackling area formulas tended to guess answers rather than work through the method, especially with shapes like trapeziums.

When faced with challenging worded questions in Year 5 maths, impatience meant the full problem wasn't read carefully, leaving gaps in comprehension and accuracy.

Recent Achievements

One Curl Curl tutor noticed a Year 10 student who, after initially struggling with transforming equations, is now confidently converting general forms into gradient-intercept form and finding gradients with much less prompting.

In a recent session, a Year 8 student who used to rush through algebraic questions and make frequent errors took more time and completed all assigned problems with only minor mistakes—showing real growth in careful problem-solving.

Meanwhile, a younger primary student has become noticeably quicker at recalling her 3-times tables, picking up new methods to remember each set after previously hesitating when asked without prompts.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Dee Why Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Curl Curl North Public School.
